Description

In this lesson students will learn past modals for deduction using a text about the unsolved mystery of Dan Cooper. Then, a guided discovery will be exercised to teach students the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of past modals of deduction in the context of the unsolved mystery of Dan Cooper

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about a man who disappeared in the context of an unsolved mystery
  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of a mysterious event

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by describing some past photos I have on my phone. Then, I will show students a picture of Titanic. I will ask everyone if they recognize the ship. Later, I will ask them "What happened with Titanic?" Are you sure that happened? Some ss will answer the question.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask Ss to look at the text about Dan Cooper Then, I will ask them to look at the title and the pictures. Later, I will ask them "What do you think happened?" and tell them to reply in the chat Ss will write their ideas and I will read some of them out loud.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will ask Ss to find sentences with: might + have can't + have must + have Ss will go over the text and highlight the sentences. I will ask Ss to share their findings to the whole class

Clarification (10-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice
