Description

This lesson sets a general context of Modern Manners. The context is provided by Ss reading the story Mother-in-law from hell ... or daughter-in-law from hell? They practice reading for gist and scanning and then reflect on their own experiences in a writing and speaking environment.

  • To provide practice in reading through the integrated skills of skimming and scanning in the context of Modern Manners.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give practice in vocabulary and speaking in the context of Modern Manners.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

To introduce students to the topic: T will show Ss Pictures and as Guided Qs. Ask CCQs: Is this a new picture? No Is this an old picture? Yes Is he being a gentleman? Yes Are these pictures below new? Yes Is there another word for new? Yes Is this picture showing good manners? No Is this picture showing bad manners? No Is this picture showing good manners? Yes

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

For pre-reading ask Ss in Groups Ex.a ask the write 3 thinks they think would be bad manners when staying at a partner's house for the first. Ask CCQs: Is this a good manner? No Is this an old manner? No Is this a Modern Manner? Yes

While-Reading #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading tasks

In Ex.b direct students to read and skim through the text Mother-in-law from hell ... or daughter-in-law from hell? Read alone - Answer Qs in P.W Give instructions for Ex and allow to work on it for 5 min. Check understanding with ICQs. Go round the class to monitor. 2 min Peer FB

While-Reading #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

To prepare for a more challenging deduction, use Ex.C and demonstrate the activity. Find words and match with meaning. 5 mins P.W Monitor to provide assistance when needed, and note any errors. They can compare answers in Peer FB. 2 mins Give Answer Key and Drill. Model and drill words they have difficulty pronouncing. Ask CCQs to check understanding. Take specific FB

Post-Reading (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

To prepare for a more challenging deduction, use Ex.d. Make Groups and ask to read Posts and paste under H or C. G.W Competition. 5 mins They can compare answers in Peer FB. 2 mins Ask CCQs to check understanding. Specific FB Model and drill words they have difficulty pronouncing. Give out Ex.e - write individually 2mins Then compare and discuss in P.W 2mins
