Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of simple present in the context of daily life

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a simple present in the context of daily life

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will start by saying some sentences about myself, for example, I usually work at home.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will ask my students to talk about themselves.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will write some of the sentences that they said in the correct form on the board.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I work at home. CCQs: What is the role of the first word? Subject. What about the second word? Verb? I will draw a timeline on the board and ask: Does it happen in the past, present, or future? Present. Base form. Can you make it negative? Can you make it a question? Now, can you answer the question? Working at home happens every day. We use the simple present for things that happen and we do every day/every week, or every year. Give me an example of something that they do every day. Every week? Every year. We often go out on the weekend. What is often? Is it after or before the verb? Adverb. Before the main verb. I am never sick. An adverb goes before the to be verb.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Exercises in the book.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask them to tell me about things that they do every day, from when they wake up to when they go to bed.
