Education, Future Continuous
Upper Intermediate B214 level

Description

In this lesson, students learn about the future continuous through guided discovery in the context of education. The lesson starts with brainstorming what they will be doing after graduating. Then they will go through discoving the grammar with the guidance of the instuctor. Finally, there are some controlled practices from their book followed by a semi-controlled practice talking about someone' busy week. We will end the session with a group work activity, having them design a one-week school trip to another country and deciding what they will be doing there.

Main Aims

  • To provide practice and clarification of the future continuous in the context of education

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation about the future in the context of education and graduation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss pictures of graduation and elicit the word graduation or graduating. Ask Ss to scan the QR code (padlet) and ask them to answer the question: What will you be doing after you graduate? Give WC feedback by checking the answers together and discussing about it a little.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Draw Ss attention to the board. Ask them to look at the question. 'What will you be doing after you graduate?' Answer the question about yourself by showing them some pictures of what you will and won't be doing and put them on the board as marker sentences. I will be planning a holiday after I graduate. I am going to be travelling around the world. I won't be thinking of studying.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Draw their attention to the board and the marker sentences. Give Ss instructions. Tell them they will fill out the first part of the guided discovery handout (eliciting meaning). Give Ss the handouts. Ask them to work individually. ICQs: Are you working together? (no) Ask them to check in pairs afterwards. Give WC feedback by asking them the answers and marking them on the board. Make sure to clarify the meaning. Now ask Ss to fill in the blanks related to the form according to the marker sentences. Tell them to do it individually and then peer check. Give WC feedback by asking them the answers and marking them on the board. Check Ss' understanding by asking relevant CCQs if needed. Deal with any problem or confusion. Drill the pronunciation chorally and individually (backchaining) by using one of the marker sentences. Use substitutions for each clause while drilling. Highlight the connected speech, intonation and stress. Ask Ss "how can we show how sure we are about what we will be doing?" Elicit some ideas. Draw their attention to the board. Show Ss the marker sentences; this time including adverbs. I will definitely be planning a holiday. I am certainly going to be travelling around the world. I probably won't be thinking about studying. I'm likely not going to be thinking about studying. Give Ss instructions. Tell them they will fill out the the guided discovery handout. Tell Ss to look at the other side of the handouts. Ask them to work individually. Give WC feedback by asking them the answers and marking them on the board. Make sure to clarify the meaning. Check Ss' understanding by asking relevant CCQs if needed.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Give Ss instructions. Tell them to fill in the blanks on p.44 and 45. (Ss who do not have the book may use the handouts.) Ask them to do it alone. Give them the handouts. Ask them to check in peers. Give WC feedback by going through the questions and asking the answers and write the answers. Check the answers and deal with any problem.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ask Ss to work in pairs. Tell them they should look at Graham's diary for the next week and take turns asking and answering questions. Give them the handouts. Ask ICQs if needed to make sure the Ss know what to do. Give WC feedback by asking about Graham's week.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Tell Ss they are in a graduation party. Next give them a 'find sb who..?' handout including some questions. Tell them they may add one more question too. Tell Ss to mingle around the class and meet with other Ss in the party and collect information. Give WC feedback by asking who they have met and what will they be doing after graduation. FLEXI STAGE: Put Ss in small groups. Show them posters of different countries and tell them to imagine they are responsible of planning a one-week school trip to one of the countires. They have to think about these questions: When will you be going? What will you be doing there? Where will you be visiting? What will be eating? What activities will you be trying? Ask each group to chose a poster by chance. Tell the Ss that they can take notes. Give WC feedback by asking about their plans. Delayed error Correction: Do delayed error correction by writitng some errors you noticed during the activity on the board and ask them to think and correct them.
