Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about daily routine in the third person

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review and practice of routine verbs in the context of habits and personal information

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

. project a picture of 'Elliot Maddox' from the previous lesson and elicit what they remember about him, ask 'Who is he?' 'What is his job'. elicit 'He's Elliot Maddox and he's a computer millionaire.'

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

. project a picture 'Elliot's sister, Lois', ask ' who is she?' try to elicit or tell that she is his sister . to review he/she with present simple, project pictures of her daily life with verbs they know first 'She is 25.' 'She is an artist.' 'She has a dog.' 'she eats breakfast' then move to the next slide of the new verbs 'cook, invite, phones, get home' and elicit them from pictures . elicit some sentences of the new verbs 'She cooks dinner.' 'She plays the piano.' . drill the pronunciation of the new verbs alone

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

. write the sentence 'She ........ in a small house' . model detecting the verb 'lives' by highlighting 'house' as an instruction for the reading gap-fill handout . give the gap-fill reading text, Ss predict and detect what verb is suitable . peer check and then final FB by listening to T 6.11, probably more than once

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

. CCQ 'Is she an artist?' 'does she live in an apartment?' 'does she get up at 7?' 'does she like her job?' 'does she like music' 'does she sleep early?' . ask 'Who does Lois phone sometimes?' to lead into the listening exercise about one of her phone calls with her brother . to review adverbs, draw a line on the board, write 'always' at one end and 'never' at the other, elicit usually/ often by writing the percentage . remind them of their jobs 'what's her job? she's an artist' 'what's his job? he's a millionaire' and then ask them to predict the adverbs in the listening script . peer check and final FB by listening to T6.12, probably more than once . write the answers on the WB

Controlled Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide practice of the target language

. choose a celebrity, hide his/her name and elicit questions about him/ her, by writing on the WB 'name, age, job, country, work and living place' . ask every Ss to choose a favorite celebrity to write about the previous info except the name . in pairs, ask the previous reviewed questions by using the question words on their handouts to figure out who is the person
