Simple Past Regular Verbs Lesson

Description

In this lesson, students will learn regular verbs through guided discovery based on a listening text about the school memories of three people and and practise using the past tense for negative, affirmative and interrogative sentences. The lesson starts with a listening track through which they are to discover the form of regular verbs and then they cover controlled exercises. They make sentences in simple past tense and cover some contolled exercises and they finish the lesson asking each other questions.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of simple past tense for affirmative, negative, and interrogative sentences using regular verbs

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and specific information listening practice using a text about school memories

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show the ss pictures about context of school and ask them to discuss them in pairs in 1 minute: 'Look at the pictures and discuss them with your partner.' and get feedback.

Exposure (5-7 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will provide ss with a listening track which they will first listen for the gist and then to match phrases: 'Listen to three people talking about their school days and get the general idea.', 'In this worksheet, you will match the phrases alone.' (exercise 1), 'Now compare your answers with your partner.' then give the answers.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

They will get the listening text to find the past form of regular verbs ending in -e,-ie, etc. and ask them complete the chart (exercise 2) with these verbs in groups. 'Now read the text and fill in the form with verbs from the text.', 'Now compare your answers. Then I will elicit answers and they will write them on the board.

Clarification (2-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After ss complete the chart which I also reflect on the board, I will ask them to come to the board and write the formula for regular verbs. 'Now, come to the board and complete the formula.' I will elicit the meaning of regular & irregular verbs.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

I will provide them with several regular and irregular verbs and ask them to categorize them in a chart (execise 3) I will give another worksheet where they fill in the blanks with regular verbs (exercise 4). 'Now, fill in the blanks in the correct form. You have 3 minutes.', 'OK, compare your answers with your partner. Eliciting the answers, writing them on the board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (4-7 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Ss will listen to some people talking about last night and match the pictures with the expressions (exercise 5) . 'Listen to some people talking about last night and match the pictures with the expressions. They will listen again to understand who had fun last night. 'OK, listen again to find the person who had fun last night.'. Eliciting answers. Finally, they will fill in the blanks with the correct words (exercise 6). 'Now, try to remember what people said and fill in the blanks with the correct words.' Answering.

Free Practice (3-5 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will write on the board 'things you did (at school), things you didn't, things other people did' expecting them to write sentences affirmative, negative and interrogative form. I will divide them into groups giving time think in 1 minute. One / each person from the group will write sentences on the board in different colour boardmarkers. The group with more sentences will be the winner
