Description

Students will review modal verbs and listen for main ideas and specific information.

Materials

Abc Handout

Main Aims

  • To provide gist listening practice and listening for specific information using a video about the difficulties of working in an ER.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of modal verbs, comparatives and superlatives in the context of work challenges.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-10 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Brainstorm as a group: What are some challenging aspects about being a veterinarian? Teacher writes some of the students' ideas on the board.

Pre-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Show title of the video. Clarify vocabulary: Peek, rough, ER. Students write down 3 sentences individually, with predictions about the difficulties the man will talk about in the video. Provide any vocabulary students need for their predictions.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist listening tasks

Distribute handout. Read instructions for activity A together. Play video once. Ellicit answer from group.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (10-15 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Read instructions for activity B. Students read questions individually in silence. Play video once more so they can answer.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Look at your predictions and discuss how accurate they were. Compare the vet's difficulties with your own (in groups of three).
