Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and scan reading practice using a text about the most dangerous place in the world to cross the road in the context of finding the general idea by reading quickly, and selecting the best item by reading carefully

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this part, the teacher shows the picture of the book, and asks a few questions about it, for example, Is it easy or difficult to cross this road? Do you feel safe on this road?

Pre-Reading/Listening (3-6 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

this part starts with the teacher asks the skimming question for finding the gist. Then, all students try to read whole of the reading for answering that question. As well as, before students start reading, the teacher can writes some difficult vocabularies on the board for understanding better.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

for this item, there should be some scanning questions that students answer them. The teacher explains how to answer. And, in part A of the book,students should read the text carefully for finding specific answer.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (5-8 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

there are some comprehension questions which are designed in part B of the book, so the teacher explains how to answer them and solves the first question, then the students answer them and check with their partners, then the teacher gives feedback.

Post-Reading/Listening (5-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

This part starts with the teacher who read the text loudly with correct pronunciation, after that if there are some new words in the text, the teacher will teach them and write them on the board.
