Teaching Practice 4
Beginner level

Description

In this Lesson, SS will be involved in receptive skill development by scan reading and detail reading. The reading will lead into a grammar lesson of the verbs 'to have, to like, to work, to live, to study' to be used for generalizations and hobbies with vocabulary they have learnt in previous classes. They will then produce controlles written and speaking activities.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide a grammar lesson on the affirmative and negative simple present form of the verbs 'to have, to like, to live, to work, to study' using pre-existent vocabulary in the context of generalizations and hobbies.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To expose SS, through gist and detail reading, to the grammar they will learn.

Procedure

Stage 1 (warm up) (3-4 minutes) • Warm up to review vocabulary and introduce the verb 'to have'.

T will ask SS to come get a picture of an object or thing. SS will go back to their seats but stay standing up. SS will look at their picture, T will make sure that SS knows what their picture is by asking the weaker SS. T will model "I have a ..." and point to a SS to do the same. SS will go one after the other in order of the U shape they have formed.

Stage 2 (reading receptive skills) (7-10 minutes) • SS will scan read for specific detail and will detail read for context.

T will put a photo of Ricardo on the WB. SS will make predictions. T will ask " Where is he from? What's his job? Does he have a family? What does he like? T will take the text and explain that they will have to read quickly, and will demo this with her finger, to underline the family vocabulary and names. T will write family on WB and underline it. CCQ's will be " Will you read slowly? Will you circle or underline? T will HO reading text. T will give second scan reading task. T will ask SS to circle all the verbs they see. T will write verb on WB and circle it. CCQ's " can you give me an example of a verb" T will give last reading task, detailed reading to answer statements about Ricardo. T will tell them to circle the correct answer. T will have them unfold their HO to see the questions. For FB, they will compare their answers with the person next to them. Statements will be put on WB, SS will come and circle the correct answer.

Stage 3 ( Grammar introduction) (10-12 minutes) • SS to be engaged in learning the affirmative/negative simple present of the verbs 'to have, to like, to study, to work, to live'.

T will put Affirmative (+) model sentences on WB. T will ask SS to underline the verb, one will be given as example. They will work in pairs. T will take decision to change seating if there is no stronger SS beside a weaker SS. T will give HO. CCQ's: what will you underline? FB: T will have SS come to the board and underline. T will put negative (-) model sentences on the WB, T will ask SS how to make it negative. T will demo the first. T will ask ask them to unfold the HO and fill in the gaps as they PW. FB: SS will give orally.

Stage 4 ( pronunciation-word and sentence stress) (7-9 minutes) • To elicit from SS the word and sentence stress of model sentences.

T will have all 10 model sentences ( 5 affirmative and 5 negative) on the WB. T will ask SS to say double + syllable words and have them point out the word stress. T will underline. T will then have them say the entire sentence to elicit where the sentence stress is. T will circle. T will choral drill with SS standing up. T will do hot error correction at this point.

Stage 5 (controlled productive writing excercise) (5-7 minutes) • SS will practice the verbs they have learnt in a controlled fill in the gap acitivity.

T will show HO and tell SS to work in pairs to fill in the gaps with 'like, have, live, work, and study'. CCQ: T will ask what (-) means and what (+) means. T will give HO. FB: SS will change partners to compare answers. T will put answer key on WB. T will ask who had 1, 2, 3 mistakes.

Stage 6 ( controlled productive speaking practice) • To have them make their own affirmative and negative sentences with pictures used in warm up.

T will ask SS to take out their pictures. T will demo with SS. T will show her picture to SS and SS will show theirs. T will say " I don't have (whatever the SS picture is). I have a ( whatever T picture is.)." SS will mingle. T will monitor and give DEC. xxx This is extra practice if time permits.
