Meeting places around the world - reading and vocabulary

Description

In this lesson, students learn about where friends meet up in different countries of the world. The lesson beginns by presenting them some slides with possible places where people meet up. They will have some vocabulary practice applicable in the real life.

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and specifice information reading practice using the text about meeting places around the world in the context of where generally people meet up

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of the use of different words and in situation of conversation like where to meet with friends.

Procedure

Stage 1- Lead in (4-6 minutes) • To introduce the lesson and raise the Ss's interest for the context of the lesson.

Teacher introduces herself and checks that she knows Ss's names. Teacher shows them some pictures with different places. Ss must say what those places are. What do you see in the picture? A house. What about in this picture? A shopping center, a mall A Coffe shop, a market, a park, a famous square in Istanbul, the sea side. Do people meet in these places? Yes. Do you meet up with your friends in a place like these? Yes. Teacher ask Ss to work in pair to talk about where and when they meet their friends last time and what they did.

Stage 2 - Gist reading and reading for details (14-20 minutes) • To have a general idea about the text and to look for specific details

Teacher gives in a gist task to students and then asks them to read the text "Meeting people around the world" Let's see where people from other countries meet up with their friends. Teacher writes on the board the gist tasks. Where do they meet up? What do they do? Read the four texts and then say where these people meet up and what they do? Then the teacher does the whole class feedback. Teacher does the exercise 3 page 35 of the coursebook which is prepared as a cut up. Here students must read the text again for detail. Teacher gives the intstruction before giving the cut ups to students. Complete the gaps in the text wit hte phrases below. The phrases are in the cut ups. Students work in pair to compare their answers. Then teacher nominate some students to write on the board the corect answers

Stage 3 - Reading for vocabulary deduction (10-15 minutes) • To deduce which verb goes for each group of expression

Teacher give another pair work task to stimulate students speaking. Instruction and write the instruction on the board: Think of a friend you haven't seen for a long lime and you want to meet up with him. What friend do you want to meet? Where do you want to meet him? What do you want to do? Did you meet your friend? No. Do you want to meet up with him? Yes When? In the future. Ss are advised to use their imagination. Students will try to talk to other three students about their friend that he/she wants to see in the future. Then Studentss are requested to do the Vocabulary ex. 1 page 35 of the coursebook which is prepared as a cut up. Instructions: Write the verb from the text that goes with each group of expressions. The task may be too difficult for them so, teacher may need to write the verbs to be matched on the board. meet live talk go see play Students will check the answers in pairs and then the WCFB.

Stage 4 - Vocabulary rehearsal ex.2 (4-5 minutes) • To enhance the target language

Teacher gives instruction for the next task and then gives them the cut ups. Write four sentences to describe what you do with your friends when you meet up. Use the expressions from the exercise 1. Then Ss check with their partner their answers.
