Special Occasions, Ordinal Numbers and Months

Description

In this lesson, SS will be exposed to the functional language of the ordinal numbers in the concept of special occasions. The lesson will follow the TTT approach in which I will test the background knowledge of the SS, then teach according to the issue they might have in the (meaning, pronunciation or form). The lesson will start with a lead-in to set the context, testing stage to highlight SS problems, then clarification stage, and finally another testing stage.

Main Aims

  • To provide review, clarification and practice of language used for Ordinal numbers in the context of Special occasions

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency and accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of special occasion
  • To provide review of Special occasions' name and phrases said in those occasions.

Procedure

Lead-in (3-7 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- T will show SS a picture with some famous special occasions - SS, in pairs, will talk about the occasions names and dates. ICQs: *Are you working alone or with a partner? *Are you thinking about the celebrations?... No/ the name?.... Yes/ the date?...... Yes - SS will give FB as an open discussion. - T will ask SS about which occasions they celebrate, and what are the phrases they say. - T will present HO1 to SS telling them to match Individually the occasions, the picture, and the phrase. - SS will pair check the ex, then T will provide an answer key as FB.

Test #1 (8-10 minutes) • To gauge students' prior knowledge of the target language

- T will give SS HO2 asking them to do ex1 first. - SS will unscramble the months and put them in the correct order. - SS will check in pairs, T will give FB as an image projected on the W/b - T will give SS to do ex2. He will carefully monitor to catch any problems the SS might have. - Answers will be given by T on the W/b.

Teach (8-10 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

- T will write the marker sentences on the board. 1. My birthday is on 15th of September. 2. New Year Eve is on 31st of December. -T will clarify SS problem through the following stages. *Meaning: T will mention that 15th means the day num 15 in the month, and so for other ordinal numbers. *Pronunciation: T will drill the marker sentences paying emphasising SS to pronounce /θ/ correctly. T will show SS the week form in the marker sentences with the finger technique. *Form: T will elicit the form of the marker sentences form SS i.e. (O Num -with the symbol- + of + Month ). T will mention that there is a nother form, and will write it on the W/b. T will tell SS the difference.

Test #2 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

-T will model a dictation technique to SS 3 times. -T will dictate his special occasions and let SS write try to write them. - SS will check in pairs, then T will give FB. - SS will be regrouped by T. - SS will dictate dates to their partners, and T will be discreetly monitoring the activity. - SS will be given the FB by their partners.

Free practice (6-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

-T will present a calendar HO. -T will mark some of his special occasions. -T will model the activity by asking on his college for help *College: Why ............... is important for you? *T: because it is my birthday. - T will give the freer activity HO to SS. - SS will mark their important dates. - In groups, S will ask the same question and answer about themselves. -T will be fannishly monitoring. - T will give delay FB as a wrap up.
