Materials
Main Aims
-
• To provide clarification of “used to” in the context of past habits and states.
Subsidiary Aims
-
• To provide accuracy speaking practice through a conversation activity in the context of talking about past and present habits.
Procedure (39-52 minutes)
In this stage, I will start by telling students about some things I used to do in the past but don’t do anymore.
In this stage, I will ask my students to share a few things they did regularly in the past but don’t do now.
I will write some of the students’ sentences on the board in the correct form, making sure to include affirmative, negative, and question forms of used to.
I will clarify the meaning of used to by drawing a timeline on the board to show that it refers to past habits or states that are no longer true now. I will check students’ understanding by asking CCQs. After clarifying the meaning, I will elicit the structure from students and write it on the board, highlighting the three forms: affirmative (I used to play football), negative (I didn’t use to play football), and question (Did you use to play football?).
The students are going to do exercises A and B and C and D on page 86 in the grammar bank individually in 4 minutes. Then, they will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs. Finally, we will check the answers together as a whole class, clarifying any mistakes or misunderstandings.
I will ask my students to talk in groups of three, about their past habits using used to.
