Main Aims

  • To provide practice in gist listening and speaking skills using the context of the audio "Life in Istanbul" and phrases with like, have, live, work and study

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide necessary vocabulary for listening and speaking practises

Procedure

Stage 1 (7-9 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

a)Put ss into 3 groups by numbering them as number 1-2-3. Tell all number 1s to make a group and same for the other numbers. Give each group a set of cards on which there are phrases. One word of each phrase is underlined. One ss from each group comes and picks a card. Ss have to explain the underlined word on the card by talking and/or using body language. When their team guesses the right word, that student joins the group and a new student comes and picks a new card. The first group to finish all the cards is the winner. b)Give students the matching HO. Ss look ar the phrases on the cards and fill in the blanks on the given HO with the phrases. c) Put ss into groups of 3. Give each group a set of cards and a dice. Write on the board: 1-2= I, 3-4=you, 5-6=they. Ss will roll the dice and use the subject pronoun depending on the number they have on the dice. Then pick a card and make affirmative or negative sentences using the phrases on the cards.

Stage 2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through listening

a) Tell ss that they are going to listen to a text about their teacher. Tell them to listen carefully and find three of the verb + noun collacations that they have learned before (scanning). b) Ask ss to tell you what they have heard and write them on the WB. c) Then tell them that they are going to do a T/F activity about the listening text. Give them the HO and tell them to read the questions for a minute. As they listen they do the activity (skim listening). d) Ask them to pair check their answers. e) Show the correct answers on the board for FB. (or give an answer key) f) Use the phrases on the board to remind ss of the grammar topic (simple present affirmative and negative form) that they have learned.

Stage 3 (18-20 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Show ss the HO (pair work). Explain them how to do the activity by demostrating on the board. Activity: Put the students into pairs. Ss complete the phrases according to themselves as positive or negative. Then they use these phrases in sentences and tell their partners about themselves. Partners take notes of what they say. Then they show each other their HO and check their answers.

Stage 4 (8-10 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

As ss are doing the speaking activity, walk around and listen to any errors that they do and take notes of them. When the activity is over, write these errors on the board and ask ss where the mistake is. "What's wrong in this sentence?"

Stage 5 (3-5 minutes) • Filler Activity

If there is any time left, put the ss in pairs (different from the last activity) and ask them to tell their partners about themselves using the phrases that they have learned in affirmative and negative form as a free practice.
