Main Aims

  • To provide practice of listening for gist and specific detail.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with the opportunity to speak and practice the TL.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show a picture of a zoo and ask the students where is it?and elicit the answer "zoo". Then I will ask them to talk in pairs" do you like animals? and what is your favorite animal?" and get the whole feedback by asking some of them at the end. After that I will project 4 pictures of animal, one in the zoo, one in the farm, one at home and in the sea. After try to elicit the word pet, animals we have/keep at home.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will elicit them the common pets, like : cats, dogs, birds, goldfishes, hamsters and rabbits. Also I will show these pictures on the projector. Then I will ask them to work in pairs "Do you have a pet?" and " What animal is it? " I will get the whole feedback and write on the board how many of them have a cat and how many a dog. and ask who likes dogs? and who likes cats? Why? I will brainstorm the reasons on the board. I will also show some pictures of dogs use in our lives to make the topic more tangible for them. Then I will pre-teach them some vocabularies of the listening such as sled, carry, awful, intelligent and defence. And give them a matching HO to match pictures and these words.

While-Listening #1 (4-6 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

I will tell them to " Listen and write 3 things we use dogs for." and divide board into three parts. then play the listening. give them time to pair check. then monitor if they need I will replay and get the whole class feed back by asking three of them to write on the board.

While-Listening #2 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with more opportunity to listen and practice their listening skills (gist listening)

I will write on the board that I like dogs but I dislike cats and put two faces happy and sad as well as writhing that I dislike means I do not like cats. Then I will show them the handout in chest and give them the instruction: Listen and circle like or dislike? does the speaker like or dislike? Then I will pair check and then project it on the board to circle for the whole feedback and ask them why like or dislike? (needs more profound attentive listening)

Detailed Listening #2 (9-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed information listening tasks

I will ask the students to listen again and answer the questions on their HOs. I will pause after each part of it and replay if they need. I will give them time to pair check before each replaying and get the feed back on the board by calling their name and if there are any wrong answer which they do not agree we will listen to that part only.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to produce the TL and expand on what they've learned

I will put them in four groups based on their favorite animal then I will have a speaking activity in two part in part A: I will ask them to talk in their groups Are dogs man's best friend or no? Why? I will get some feedbacks and then show them part B HO and give instruction to speak about the questions. For the feedback I will ask them to question other groups.
