Description

This lesson builds on the previous one by continuing with the same context. In this lesson, students revise articles. Then they put the language into practice in a speaking activity.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

- SS get cutouts with articles and nouns. - SS get up and search for their partner by matching articles and nouns. - SS read out their pair and explain how they knew the answer. - T: What are we going to talk about today? - Articles

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

- T displays a gap fill example from the course book. (a) - SS work in pairs to find correct answers. - T pass out WB markers to one student in each pair. - SS come to the board and write one answer. - T asks each pair to clarify their answers. Instructions: - Look at the board. - Work in pairs. Find the missing articles. - You've got 3 minute. ICQ: What is missing in these sentences? - Articles. How much time do you have? - 1 minute. Instructions: - Who has got a marker? - Show me your markers! - You are going to come to the board and write one answer. ICQ: What are you going to do now? - Write the answers. How many answers? - One. Nominate the students to clarify their answers.

Highlighting (3-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

- T groups the students in 2 or 3 groups. - T displays the text 'Men talk just as much as women- can it really be true?'. - 1 S from each group comes to the board. They highlight the TL. Instructions: - Form groups please. - Look at the board. - Every group gets one marker. - Put your markers up (nominate SS with the markers). - You are going to come to the board and underline all articles you can see in this text! ICQ: Are you going to underline verbs? - No. What are you going to underline? - Articles. Will you try to be fast? - Yes. - T makes the task harder. - SS have to find 'zero article'. Instructions: Pass the markers to another students in your group. Show me your markers! Now, you are going to find the 'zero article' in the text. What does the 'zero-article" mean? - No article. When do we use it? - Plural, uncountable nouns... Put a line or letter x in front of the words with no article. ICQ: Are you going to search for articles a, an and the? - No. What are you searching for? - Zero article/ No article. Will you try to be fast? - Yes.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

SS recieve HO's. Match example sentences with the usage. Work in pairs. You've got 5 minutes. T monitors and helps if needed. Pass out AK.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

T asks CCQ to check understanding. T checks the pronunciation. T reads words to SS. SS have 4 colorful cutouts, each colour representing one article. As T reads, students pick up the correct colour and show it to the T. Instructions: So a is red, an is blue, the is pink and zero article is white. As you hear the word, you will raise up your hand with the correct colour. Is 'a' red? - Yes. Is 'the' pink? - Yes. What are you going to do when you hear the word? - Show the correct colour.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

T pass outs HO's. SS fill in the blanks. Work in pair.

Free Practice (6-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T regroups SS. SS work in pairs or small groups. Instructions: Prove that the research A gossip with the girls? is wrong. If you're a woman, try to talk for two minutes about: football, cars, computers. If you're a man, try to talk for two mintes about: fashion, shopping, your family. ICQ: Are you going to talk or write? - Talk. Women, are you going to talk about fashion? - No. What are you going to talk about? - Football, cars, computers. Men, are you going to talk about fashion, shopping and your family? - Yes.
