Main Aims

  • To provide scan reading practice using a text about Recycling in the context of environmet

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide review of recycling in the context of environmet

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Introduce students to the lesson´s objective. Have students proceed to slide 2 and elicit one question from them. Check understanding (do you write or speak?)

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Redirect students to the next slide. Explain how those pictures relate to the text. Have them make predictions about it. Have them answer in pairs.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (11-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

Tell students that they will read an extract of the text. Have them ask and answer: What is the main point of the paragraph? Where do you see that fragment in a text: start, middle, or end? Using prior ideas, try to complete the text Ensure understanding: Do you speak and write? Do you work alone?

While-Reading/Listening #2 (12-14 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Have them read the text completely and answer the questions. Validate.

Post-Reading/Listening (14-16 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Have students work in pairs to research another single-use plastic item (e.g., plastic straws, plastic bags, disposable cups). Give them the following questions to guide their research: When did this item first start to be used? Did it become more popular? How many of these items are used today? Is anything being done to reduce its use? You could then have students present their findings to other pairs or have them write a paragraph about their chosen item and post it in a designated area of the classroom for other students to read. If class time is limited, you could have students carry out the research at home and write their paragraphs or prepare their presentations for homework
