Main Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a stress, intonation drills in the context of pronunciation

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice of pronunciation of new vocabulary in the context of pronunciation

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

teacher asks ;what do you usually do on new years eve? students share briefly in open class. teacher writes some key words (party, fire works, dinner)on the boards to activate students

Exposure (3-4 minutes) • To provide a model of the target question and highlight key words

teacher shows work sheet with missing words. asks students to guess the missing words in pairs. plays audio(track 7.18) once for students to listen and check.

task (3-4 minutes) • to give students an opportunity to recon structure question

in small groups, students complete the question on the hand out. teacher monitors and provides support as needed

planning (5 minutes) • to check answers and raise awareness of correct question on the board. highlights stressed words (wh-words, content words)

teacher elicit answer from groups, write correct questions on the boards. highlights stressed words(wh- words, contents words).

teacher pronunciation focus (6-8 minutes) • to expose students to natural rhythm and sentence stress

teacher pronunciation, exaggeration stress. plays audio again, asking students to mark stress on their hands out. then choral drilling(whole class, then smaller groups, then individuals

practice (controlled) (2-3 minutes) • to allow students to practice producing the questions fluently

students work in pairs. one student asks the questions, the other answers. then swap roles.

feedback (4-5 minutes) • to consolidate learning and correct errors

teacher asks a few pairs to perform their Q&A for the class. gives feedback on pronunciation and rhythm.
