To provide practice of imperatives in the context of health suggestions
Procedure (45-55 minutes)
Introduce the class topic. Have students ask and answer questions. Elicit one for students Recap instructions and have them answer in pairs.
Read the problems from the PPTX. Give three pieces of advice to your partner. Elicit one for the students. Write it on the board... Ex: The first thing to do when there is an earthquake is that you NEED to TAKE a deep breath, and STAY calm. Have them work it in pairs, and write top advices.
Elicit answers from students. Notate and have them vote on the top 3. Highlight structure. Refer to that: these are instructions, but we also use the imperative to give advice, and adding please makes them more polite
Write the following scenarios on the board: A patient gets some unusual advice from the doctor. A patient goes to the doctor, but he doesn’t like the doctor’s advice. A patient goes to the doctor with an unusual problem. Assign students a partner and have them choose one scene to role-play. Give them time to prepare and practice. When all pairs are ready, they can present their role plays to the class. Recap instructions to ensure understanding. Confirm the importance of speaking practice, rather than writing. Prior to finishing, organize students so that at least 2 pairs present. Ask students to use a slide to prepare feedback.
Ask students to provide feedback on the presentations and identify improper imperative misuse. Have them review and recap the lesson's objective.
