Description

In this lesson the Ss will learn the simple negative for through a guided lesson format using supplied text reading for gist and detail.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide learning through reading and guided diocovery
  • To provide gist reading practice using a text about Read When is New Years Day? in the context of Calendars from around the world

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce the present simple negative form

Procedure

Lead In (2-3 minutes) • Familiarize Ss with New Years Day

Show slide with pictures of New Years photos and elicit the concept Model story of New Years Elicit FB to CCQ concept via - How do you know this is New Years?

Pre-teach (3-5 minutes) • Confirm their understanding of key words in the reading

pre-teach the following words from the text: Calendar (fom picture in slides) year - 12 months = a year (slide)

Skim Reading (5-8 minutes) • Skim read text for 1 minute

1. Give clear instructions on start and stop 2. Give HO - face down 3. Cinfirm instructions of 1 minutes to skim read for gist and answer Ex.1 pg. 24 4. PW to check 5. WC to FB on WB

Detailed Reading (8-10 minutes) • Read and listen to text - complete exercises

1. Listen to audio track 1.52 of the text, re-play if neccessary 2. Re-read text 3. SS to complete ex.2 on pg. 24 4. Check in PW 5. WC for FB

Grammar (5-8 minutes) • Present simple negative form

1. Give HO #2 - Introduce TL from grammar box adapted on OHP 2. Elicit TL - meaning from reading 3. Model using sentences 4. CCQ - reversing sentences and don't / doesn't 5. Drill - using both sentences, until pronunciationis correct 6. Complete form on the WB / slide - have SS do as well for written record 7. Complete Ex.1 on pg.25, check with PW, WC for FB and correction

Practice of Grammar (3-5 minutes) • To practive learned grammar from reading

1. SS to complete Ex. 3 on pg. 25 - remind them of Mervat's lesson and relate. 2. Prepare for GW

Semi-controlled speaking practice (8-12 minutes) • To complete group exercises and facilitate speaking in group setting

1. Organize SS into groups by height - Give out HO #3 2. Instruct SS that their aim is to see which other SS thay have the most common answers with 3. Have groups complete exersice with group and share answers 4. Continue to next exercise and new grouping if there is time 5. Encourge as much speaking as possible and reiforce all previous lessons
