intermediate level

Description

In this lesson, students are going to learn about the second conditional in the context of what would happen if I were rich. After this lesson, the students are going to be able to use the second conditional to talk about hypothetical situations and what they would do in those situations.

Materials

Abc American English File Student's book
Abc board

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of second conditional in the context of dreams and imaginary situations

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of imaginary situations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (1-2 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

at this stage i will tell my students to imagine a senario in which they wake uo someday and have one million dollars. i will tell them what i would do if i had that much money.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

at this stage i will ask my students what would they do if they had that much money.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

At this stage, I will write some of the examples that the students have given me on the board.

Clarification (10-12 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will clarify the meaning of the second conditional by writing an example on the board. I will separate the two sentences. I will draw a timeline on the board, and for the first sentence, I will ask these CCQs: (How many sentences do you have here? 2. Is it an imaginary situation or real? Imaginary. Does it happen in the past, present, or future? Past. Can I change the to be verb? No. If I changed the verb from "was" to "were" would the meaning change? No). Then I will elicit each part of the first sentence. I will ask these CCQs for the second sentence: (Does it happen in the past, present, or future? Present. What is the negative form? Wouldn't. Can I write this kind of sentence without the if clause? Yes. Can I use "could" instead of "would"? Yes. Can you make this a question?). Then I will elicit each part of the second sentence. Then I will ask them to change the subject and rewrite the sentence. I will ask these CCQs: Do any of the verbs change? "Would" doesn't change. Then I will change the placement of the sentences and ask: What is the difference? Comma.

Controlled Practice (3-5 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

The students are going to do exercises 3 and 5 from part A and 4, 8, and 10 from part B from page 144 of the book. They have 3 minutes to do the exercises individually, then we will check with the whole class.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

I will ask my students to tell me what they would do if they woke up rich someday. Then we will rank each activity based on its popularity.
