A demonstration lesson that provides clarification and practice of past simple regular and irregular verbs for pre-intermediate adult students

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Read and check the questions with Ss. Teach / check 'love at first sight'. Then give them 2-3 mins to discuss the question. 1. Do you believe in love in first sight? Why / why not? 2. Where are good places to meet new people? (possible answers to 2: at work / college, in clubs / societies, playing sports, at parties or friends' houses etc

Exposure (4-6 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Screenshare G-Form. Tell Ss to look at the photos as they give clues to what the love stories are about. Demonstrate task: Ss have to decide what is the correct headline for each article. Give Ss 2 mins to read and choose from the selection of three options. Share G-Form link in chat. Answers: Article A - Tallest Man Finds Love Article B - Third Time Lucky

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Screenshare G-Doc. Invite Ss to highlight examples of verbs in the past simple in the texts, using yellow highlighting tool. Demo how to do this with first example in the text (married). Share link to G-Doc in chat and set a maximum time of 2 mins (ICQ: how much time do you have? Ask Ss to confirm with 'thumbs up' reaction they have received and accessed the link. Ss work individually; check progress and prompt where necessary. Show answer key on slide when time is up. Answers: Tallest man - became, appeared, was, didn't go out, didn't have, worked, didn't make, started, decided, advertised, fell in love, got married. Third time lucky - married, liked, said, asked, accepted, started, argued, got divorced, remarried, divorced, got back together, did they get married, explained, fell, changed, decided.

Clarification (12-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

M - Stage A. Display Figjam slide. Focus Ss on question. Check meaning of 'whose' in rubric. Share link in chat. Give Ss 2 mins to read the sentences and match them to the correct text. In FB, elect more details of the stories where possible, e.g., Why didn't he have a girlfriend? Because he was shy and he didn't go out much. Suggested answers: Tallest man finds love: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 9, 10. Third time lucky; 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10. Stage B. Screenshare G-Slides. Tell Ss they will each have a slide with their name on it. Ss match definitions alone and check OC. Check / drill pronunciation of the phrases if necessary. Answers: a) 2 b) 6 c) 4 d) 3 e) 10 f) 7 g) 8 CCQ: do the sentences refer to now, the future or the past (answer: the past) F - Screenshare form table on page 2 of G-Doc. Refer Ss to the love stories to help them complete the table. Have Ss work in pairs after sharing labelled G_Doc. In feedback, elect the regular and irregular past forms and the spelling of -ed endings, e.g., marry-married. Check gapped sentences are completed. Answers: Regular: started, decided, married Irregular: became, fell, got, said Negative: didn’t Question: Did Short answer: didn’t P - Stage A - Show phonemic symbols on G-Slide and drill them. /d/ lived They lived in Africa. /t/ asked He asked her to marry. /ɪd/ started They started a family. Note: /d/ is a voiced consonant and /t/ is unvoiced. Illustrate to Ss. Tell them to touch their throat with fingers. When they say /d/ they feel a vibration in throat but with /t/ they don't. Play recording while Ss read sentences. Stage B -Show three column table. Give each pair a (labelled) slide and ask them to put the verb in the correct column. Pause after each verb for Ss to write it in correct column. Elicit / check Ss's answer. Drill the verbs chorally and then individually. Answers: /d/ smiled, studied /t/ worked, stopped, walked, talked, helped /ɪd/ wanted, needed, decided

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Practice A - Show G-Doc. Do the first one OC together to illustrate that only one answer is possible and Ss need to change from the base form to the past simple. Share G-Doc link and give 3 mins max. In feedback, elicit answers and ask 'is it a regular or irregular verb?' Answers: 1 saw 2 went 3 stayed 4 went 5 cooked 6 spent Revise the time phrases in each sentence before B and C. Underline them: three months, ago, last Sumer, all night. Add three more examples of each phrase, e.g., two weeks ago / a year / five mis ago. Practice B - Check the example and give Ss 3-4 mins to write the questions in pairs. In FB elicit and drill the questions with the class and elect possible answers with time phrases. Suggested answers: 1 When did you last see your best friend? When did you last go to a wedding? 3 When did you last stay up all night? 4 When did you last go on holiday? 5 When dd you last cook a meal for some friends / someone? 6 When did you last spend the day with your sister / brother / boyfriend, etc?

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Practice C - Model / drill the example question and elicit personalised answers using time phrases. While Ss work in pairs. monitor and prompt them to self correct errors with the past simple. Give delayed error correction (DEC) on persistent errors with the past simple.
