To introduce related phrases and listening for specific detail.
Procedure (32-45 minutes)
Focus you students on the pictures and ask them to describe who/what they can see. (You might like to find one or two information about the people in the pictures and share it with your students if they don't tell you first. - What you can say about the picture? - Do you know who are they? What are their achievements? - Do you think their achievements made a difference to people's lives?
Set the activity, ex. 1, page 56. Do the first example with the class. Put the Ss in pairs and allow time to do the activity. Monitor and help if necessary. - Ask the Ss work in groups. Read the list of achievements from the book and students will think of an example for each. - Pass the HO's for Ss to read and think of possible answers. Ask Ss to move around and compare answers. Tell them to change their answers if they hear a better one. Then put Ss back in their groups and ask them to discuss the question in ex. 2. Monitor and help if necessary.
Ask Ss to read the questions in ex.3, page 56. Play the recording an remind Ss they don't need to write full sentences. Pause after each speaker. Put Ss in pairs to compare their answers and then play the recording again for them to check. - Ask Ss to listen on the recording carefully and write down keywords for each recording. - Ask Ss to work with their partners and discuss with their partners. Recording will be played again for checking.
Put Ss in pairs and set a time limit for them to decide on the topic. Ex. 1, page 57. Ask Ss to plan their talk in their pairs and tell them they only to need to come up with one achievement. Monitor and help if necessary. After about 5 minutes draw Ss attention to useful language and go over useful phrases and encourage them to add and use the phrases in their story. - Students will going to talk about an achievement they find amazing. Either choose from the ideas that has been discussed in the preparation stage. Or think of an idea of their own. It could be the achievement of someone they know personally, rather than a great leader/ writer etc. Change pairs making sure every Ss will hear a new story. Get Ss to listen to each other's achievement story and encourage them to ask further questions. - This stage will encourage interaction among the students. They are given a chance to talk with each other and discuss their answers. - Encourage Ss to express their opinion. - Monitor and help if necessary.
Ask Ss to give their ideas about which story they find most amazing and why. - Students will be given a chance to share the story that they find most amazing. In this stage, they will speak in front of the class.
