Description

In this lesson students will read about animals to learn new vocabulary and set the context for the following lessons.

Main Aims

  • To practice reading for gist and detail using texts about animals

Subsidiary Aims

  • To introduce students to vocabulary in the context of animals and pet owners

Procedure

Lead In (3-5 minutes) • To introduce students to animals and pets and clarify the context of the lesson

- Introduce the lesson bay asking WC questions about animals, e.g. Do you have a favourite animal?, Do you have a pet? - Show the class pictures on a PPT of unusual things people do with their pets. Have pairs decide what those unusual things are, why they are unusual and have they or a friend ever done them - Brainstorm class ideas on the WB

Pre-teach vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To pre-teach vocabulary students will need to understand the text and complete the task

- Do a matching exercise and HO a list of difficult vocab and give SS 1 minute to try check the meaning of the words in groups - HO the definitions mixed up and give SS 3 minutes in their groups to match the vocab to the definitions - HO the answer key for SS to check themselves - Show 4 difficult animals they will read about on the board and give the students clues to guess what those animals might be

Reading for gist (3-5 minutes) • To encourage SS to read for gist and get a general overview of the text

- SS will be given 1 different text each to read in groups of 3 and they will only read that text - SS will read the text quickly and try to understand the main idea - SS stand up and find another SS who has read the same text and discuss what they think it is about - Show 3 summaries of the texts on the WB and have students choose which relates to their story with their partner

Reading for specific info (10-15 minutes) • To familiarise the learners with the text

- SS read their text in more detail for 3 minutes - SS tell the other members of their group about their text for 1-2 minutes - SS find the similarities in the text in their groups - SS check ideas with their partner from the previous activity - Write the SS ideas on the board to share with the whole class

Reading for detail (10-15 minutes) • To read for detailed comprehension and to understand the text in depth

- SS turn their texts face down - Give SS HO with questions about the texts to answer individually - SS read all the texts to check their answers - SS talk to their groups to check they had the same answers - Direct SS to answer key to ensure the answers are correct

Post-reading task (speaking task) (5-8 minutes) • To allow an opportunity to react to the text and personalise the topic

- SS find their partners from the previous activity and discuss two question on the WB about the topic for 2 minutes - SS walk around the class talking to other students about their most interesting experience of animals or pets (give a personal example to encourage interaction)
