Description

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to talk about extreme weather events (e.g., hurricanes, blizzards, floods) using descriptive vocabulary and appropriate expressions for sharing personal experiences and opinions.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of vocabulary and expressions related to extreme weather.

Subsidiary Aims

  • • To provide listening for gist and detail practice through the audio conversation in Unit 4B. • To develop fluency in discussing personal experiences of extreme weather and expressing feelings.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To activate prior knowledge and generate interest.

T shows pictures of extreme weather (hurricane, flood, blizzard). Ask: “Have you ever seen weather like this? What happened?”

Exposure (Listening for Gist) (3-5 minutes) • To practice gist listening and set the context.

Play Unit 4B conversation. Task: “What kind of extreme weather are they talking about?” (Check in pairs.)

Listening for Detail (5-7 minutes) • To develop listening for specific information.

Play again. Task: Students answer questions from the book (Ex. 2).

Highlighting Vocabulary (3-5 minutes) • To help students notice target vocabulary/phrases.

T highlights useful expressions from the conversation: It was really scary / I’ll never forget / The wind was so strong.

Language Clarification (CECDW) (7-10 minutes) • To clarify meaning, form, and use of descriptive language for extreme weather.

C: Show picture of hurricane. E: “The wind was so strong. It was scary.” C: Expressions for describing extreme weather. D: “It was … scary / amazing / unforgettable.” W: Drill and write examples on the board.

Controlled Practice (5-7 minutes) • To practice vocabulary in controlled tasks.

Students match extreme weather words with pictures (Ex. 3). Then complete sentences using vocabulary (Ex. 4).

Freer Practice (7-10 minutes) • To encourage fluency and personalization using TL.

In pairs: Discuss questions from book (Ex. 5): “What’s the worst weather you’ve ever experienced?” “How did you feel?” “What did you do?”

Feedback & Error Correction (3-5 minutes) • To consolidate learning and correct errors without interrupting fluency.

T does delayed error correction on board. Highlight useful phrases students used. End with Positive feedback.
