Materials
Main Aims
-
To provide clarification of present perfect (For - Since) in the context of relationship
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of relationship and people activities
Procedure (21-30 minutes)
In this stage, first, I will talk about my own activities, mentioning my best friend. Then i will ask the students about their relation with their best friend: - the specific question: How much time do you usually spent with your best friend?
Now, I will specifically ask the students to tell me more about their friendship: - the specific question: How long have you known your best friend? (When has it started? / How long has it lasted?) I will let them talk (even incorrect) and then I will write one of the sentences that the student have made in the correct form on the board to draw their attention to the TL, for those who said it wrong to notice the differences in their own answers and the correct ones.
In this stage, I will work on MFP and CCQs. First, I will draw a timeline on the board marking the three tenses: past, present and future. I will mark the space between past and present to show when it starts (Since); Then, I will draw a line above the mark to show the duration (For). Then asking some CCQs such as: Is it started in past? Yes. / Is it finished? No. / Is *2018* a starting point or a period of time? Starter. Then, I will tell them when to use this grammar point: To mention when something has started to happen and how long it has lasted. *(MFP - Meaning) After I made sure about their answers, I will ask them to help me writing the correct way to form a present perfect sentence, using for and since (positive, negative, question form) and give an example: - Positive= Subject + Have/Has + P.P + For/Since + Time like: I have lived here for 10 years / Since 2015. Then, I will continue telling the negative and question form with giving examples. I will also mention that the question form has one specific phrase: How long... *(MFP - Form)
I will give them a task! The students are going to do the exercises on the student book (page 143) in the given time like 3 minutes and then give them 2 more minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class and correct the mistakes. To make sure they have gotten the task right, I will ask ICQs like: What are we going to do? Answer the questions. / How much time do we have? 3 minutes.
I will ask my students to discuss about the impression of social media in groups of three, express their idea about how long have people used social media like Instagram for and since when have they started using them. Then, tell the class about each other's idea and decide which social media app is more time-consuming. Then, I will wrap up the class after a quick review of the content of the session.
