Description

This lesson builds on the previous lesson by continuing with the same context (money & spending). Ss read and talk about a man who became a successful businessman without being able to read or write.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide practice in reading for gist, details, and deducing meaning of new lexis from the context

Subsidiary Aims

  • To give practice in speaking fluency using the present perfect tense in the context of Money & Spending

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

-The teacher shows a slide of a PPT listing 3 words: Rich, dream, future. The teacher asks : Is there a connection/ relation between these words? -The teacher changes the seats of the students to have some of those sitting in the front go back and vice versa. -The Ss work in pairs to discuss 2 questions in Ex. a. in 5 minutes. -The teacher nominates some of them to get a general FB.

Pre-Reading (5-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

4- The teacher asks the Ss to Look at the picture of Jeff Pearce and the title of the article and in a minute, discuss their ideas in pairs. 5-The T makes sure that the Ss know the meaning of the word secret by asking CCQs , such as: do friends share secrets? Yes Is it something private? Yes 5-The Teacher pre-teaches some of the key vocabulary that might make it difficult for the Ss to understand the gist of the text using Quizlet Flash Cards.

While-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information to find through reading the text

-The Ss are given 1 minute to read the questions in Ex.b silently. -The Ss are given 10 minutes to read the text for gist this time and in pairs answer the questions. -The teacher monitors and offers assistance if needed. -The students check their answers with another pair in the class. -The teacher projects the answers using a PPT slide show.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed reading task

-In Ex.c,The teacher clarifies the meaning of the word (event): sth that happens, especially something important. -The teacher uses the (1,2,3,4) technique for random grouping. -The teacher tells the Ss to read the article again and work in groups to number the events from A to K in the order in which they happened. The group who finishes 1st wins. -The teacher slips an answer key under one chair for each group to get the right answers.

Post-Reading (10-12 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to practice contextual guess the meaning of the difficult words using hints and clues from the text

-The teacher discusses Ex.d as a WC. -In Ex.e, the Ss work in pairs to find out the meaning of the highlighted words in 10 minutes. -The teacher encourages them to read the whole sentence, the previous and next one if needed for more confirmation. The teacher monitors to offer assistance if needed. -The Ss check their answers with each other before having a general FB. -The teacher uses quizlet flash cards to give a feedback through showing the meaning and checking as a WC which word they got for it. -The teacher asks CCQs to check understanding, model and drill words they find difficulty pronouncing. -For extra emphasis, the teacher asks Ss to turn down the text and tell which words they would like to remember from the text. Write them on the WB.

Post-Reading (3-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of speaking to each other using the target language+grammar introduced in the previous lesson.

1-The teacher gives Ss 2 minutes to work in pairs and fill in the blanks for Ex.f using the highlighted words . 2-The teacher projects the answers for the Ss to check their answers. 3-The teacher asks Ss to mingle and ask each other the questions. 4-The teacher monitors and take notes of any common errors.
