Description

In this lesson the students are going to listen to a man talking about how people today face too many choices in daily life and how these choices affect them.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed listening practice using a text about a wide range of choices in the context of everyday shopping

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of daily choices in different situations

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be asked what style and color of jeans they usually buy, and whether they sometimes have problems finding the right ones. Some pictures of jeans in different colors and styles will be shown to the students to stimulate their interest.

Pre-Reading/Listening (10-12 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Students will be guided through the meaning and form of the following vocabularies using CCQs and some pictures .Afterwards, they will complete an exercise to check their understanding and reinforce their learning. make a decision/ option/possibility/opportunity/dissatisfied/in advance/choice

While-Reading/Listening #1 (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

The students will listen to track and try to answer the following question: Does the speaker think that too many choices make us unhappy? Yes or no? The answers will be checked with whole class. Students will need to support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

Students will be asked to read the questions on page 89, part C and then the audio file will be played again. The students need to answer 5 multiple-choice questions with three options: A, B, or C and circle one option out of three. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs then we will check the answers with the whole class. Students need to say why they choose one correct option and they will need to support their ideas if they come up with different answers.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

Students will be asked to talk to each other in group of 3 or 4 about these places: in supermarkets/ in coffeeshops/ in restaurants/in clothes stores/ on TV. Discuss in your country are there a lot of choices in each of these ?and do you think having so many choices is a good or bad thing?
