Description

In this lesson students will practice phrasal verbs.

Main Aims

  • Present and practice -phrasal verbs in the context of TV programms.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide opportunity of speaking activity related to the topic.

Procedure

Warmer (3-4 minutes) • Set the context and engage students

T will ask students: In the evening,when you return home.tired,what do you do? What is your favourite activity?.......watch TV...First of all you should ....switch on...T will elicit phrasal verbs related to TV .( Some possible answers- switch on/off or turn on/down( not down). plug in( opposite-unplug), switch/turn over (to another channel). T will write phrasal verbs on the white board and elicit the grammatical form

Pre-teach vocabulary (8-10 minutes) • In order to explain phrasal verbs

T will show ss pictures on the screen and elicit phrasal verbs-look out,sold out,picked up,switch in,looking forward to,turn off,find out,passed away...Drill,ask individual ss to repeat,write phrasal verbs on the board,explain the structure ,CCQ-Is it verb or adverb?-verb T will explain the form and point out that some phrasal verbs can be separated ,e.g Please switch off your phone. Please switch your phone off. Is the meaning obvious?-yes T will ask ss to write down verb phrases. Sometimes the meaning of phrasal verb is obvious;sit down,come back. Sometimes meaning isn't obvious: give up,carry on talking.

Reading for a gist (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language

T will give ss texts and titles and asks them according to the title and picture predict what is the text about.Elicit ss ideas. T will pre-teach vocabulary. T will ask students to fill the gaps with the phrasal verbs.T will ask ss to check answers with another student.T will display answer key.

Reading for detail (7-9 minutes) • To practice target language

T will devide ss into three groups ,divide the texts and ask ss to read again more carefully and then ss will retell the story using target language

Restrictive practice (5-8 minutes) • Clarify target language by practicing grammar exercise.

T gives ss the rules ,askes them read in 2 minutes and gives the grammar exercise.Ss will check answers in pairs.

Speaking (8-10 minutes) • To provide opportunity of speaking related to the topic

T will mingle the ss,give the questionnaire and asks to tick six questions to ask a partner. They will interview each other.T will monitor them.For feedback T will ask 2-3 ss :what did you discover about your partner.

Anticipated problem

If extra time I have a plan B. T will hang sentences on the wall ,ask ss to stick the right phrasal verb in a sentence.SS will check each other's answers and correct the sentences.
