The Right Job
B1 level

Materials

Abc White board, markers, Computer screen, Answer Keys

Main Aims

  • By the end of the lesson students would have practiced gerunds and infinitives using necessary vocabulary in the context of finding the right jobs

Subsidiary Aims

  • to practice speaking using the form of the target language

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (5-8 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will instruct SS that should work in pairs and watch a video and students will speak about what they have seen. T will show the video and get feed back from them afterwards. T will then ask several questions from the video like: What do you think the video is about? What kind of two categories of jobs did the lady speak about? Which category suits you? T will then elicit vocabulary and their meaning from the response and from the video and then write them on the white board, make sentences with them and drill them with the SS.

Test #1 & # 2 (5-12 minutes) • To gauge students' understanding of the vocabulary and prior knowledge of the target language

T will instruct SS on how to get ready for the next task. They will work in pairs, and have to match the picture stories with the text. This is aimed at ensuring they understood the vocabulary. T will then pass out the hand out containing the matching task. When they are done T will tell them to check their answers with their pairs and afterwards ask for feed back orally from them and confirm their answers. Next Teacher will instruct SS on the next task which will be to fill out the gaps in the hand out. The Idea is to test their prior knowledge of the grammar (Gerunds and infinitives). T will then hand out the task to them and they are to complete it within 3 minutes. Afterwards, T will get feed back from the pairs groups.

Teach (10-15 minutes) • To clarify areas of the target language where students had difficulty in the first test stage

Teacher will write two sentences with the use of Gerunds and infinitives on the white board and then ask the students to analyse the form of each sentence. T will also tell them to come up with rules needed for their analysis. From their response, T will then teach Gerunds and Infinitives which is the main aim of the lesson and then drill their usage in the sentences.

Test #3 (5-8 minutes) • Check students' use of the target language again and compare with the first test

T will then instruct the SS to find another partner and work with them. Teacher will then tell the students to complete the remaining task that will be handed out to them afterwards by filling in the gaps. Teacher hands over the task and monitors them. Teacher then gets feed back from the students and confirms the correct answers.

Free speaking practice (13-15 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T instructs students to find a new partner and be prepared to practice the using the Gerund and infinitives. Each pair will be given two or three contexts which will guide them to speak. When they are done they can move to another group to speak with them. As they begin the T will move slowly around them listening for how well they use the target language and take note where necessary especially areas that needs corrections. This will take 8 minutes. T will then ask randomly for feedback and point out errors needed and correct them.
