Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of writing part of a problem-solution evaluation essay (about 50 words).

Subsidiary Aims

  • To teach the stages needed to write a problem-solution essay.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show picture of plastic cards (google slides). Ask Ss what each particular card is used for. Then ask if they carry similar cards and what they use them for. Keep it simple and quick, the purpose is to give them and idea about the content of the lesson.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

For this stage show picture of the TL essay, then give Ss a gist task to answer after quick read (google forms). Make them aware of paragraph layout and content. This is important as they will use it later in the lesson.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

For this stage I will ask the Ss why the author used the expressions in bold from the essay. Then I will use activity 'e' from the course book. I will have the Ss match the idea from the essay to a paragraph and reinforce structure of essay writing (google slides). We will then go over informal vs formal expressions when writing a problem-solution essay and identify who the target audience is (google slides). Explain how the use of phrasal verbs and contractions aren't used in formal speech. I will also give example of expressions to use in their own writing.

Productive Task(s) (12-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

For this stage I will have the Ss write their own problem-solution essay/report based on the notes that they took during the lesson. I will present them with a general format diagram so they can roughly set up their problem idea, reasons for the problem, solution #1, solution #2 and evaluation of the two solution options. I will ask them to explore the background of the problem then offer and evaluate alternative solutions. Then they are to write a 50 word (two paragraph) essay on one of the given prompts.

Feedback and Error Correction (5-7 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

After reading the students essays I give them an online checklist with which they can analyze their peers essays for form and structure. I will have them do this in BOR's then OCFB. I will then correct improper use of structure, lexis and grammar, while giving positive feedback for good use of the same.
