Description

In this lesson some basic adjectives and their opposites are introduced to the Ss through the context of personal possessions. The Ss will be provided with exercises and situations in which they can put the adjectives to use.

Materials

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and review of Basic adjectives and their opposites e.g. big/small - tall/short in the context of Personal possessions and favorite belongings

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist, scan and detailed reading practice

Procedure

Warmer (2-3 minutes) • To get the Ss in the class mode abd wait for late commers

A pictionary game of personal belongings will be played by two groups, reminding the Ss of some vocabulary items they already know and will be used in the lesson.

Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set the context of the lesson

The T will ask the Ss to tell him all the words that were used to play the game with and writes them quickly on the board. The Ss are asked to talk about what those things are and what they have in common in pairs and share their ideas with the WC. If time, other words are added to the list for the categorization to be clear.

Vocabulary Presentation (5-7 minutes) • To make the Ss familiar with the adjectives and pre-teach any of them if needed

A HO will be distributed with pairs of pictures and words on them for each student to match. They will be given a time limit and then they will have to check in pairs, and after at the whole class will do the activity together, this time with the HO displayed by the OHP. Since all the adjectives are already assumed to be known by the Ss, no pre-teaching for the whole class is necessary, but T will monitor their progress throughout the task and if anyone is struggling, they will be helped.

Reading For Main Ideas (6-8 minutes) • To both practice the reading skill and help student further practice word order of adjectives

A HO is distributed containing two sets of 5 sentences. The Ss are asked to read the sentences. Two readings are then distributed containing the priorly seen on sentences. The Ss are asked to go through the reading quickly and mark the sentences that do not belong to any of the readings. PW and WC for checking.

Reading For Details (6-8 minutes) • To have the Ss pay attention to details of the reading

The Ss are given a HO with True or False sentences based on the reading on them.They are asked to read the readings again and this time the Ss are supposed to brand each sentence True or False. Their answes are checked in their pairs and then as a WC.

Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To practice the order of words in sentences with adjectives in them from the Ss

Two sets of sentences will appear on the board with blanks in them and the words to fill the sentences with in front of them. A HO of he similar sentences is give. To the Ss so that they can write their answers there, check in pairs and with the WC.

Delayed Error Correction (2-3 minutes) • To correct fossilized errors

Notes will be taken during the class of the errors that are common and they will go on the board and be corrected in this stage.

Fill-in (3-4 minutes) • To have the Ss use the provided language in a game context

A back-to-the-board game will be played with Ss devided into two groups. The words used are the adjectives and other words worked on during this session.
