Main Aims

  • To provide scan and detailed reading practice using a text about various fears that people deal with by using fearof.net website

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of fear by sharing their phobia.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (4-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, I show pictures of some common fears( e.g., spiders, heights, flying, snakes). I will then ask students: Are you afraid of any of these things?/Why are you afraid of it? What happens?/Which of these do you think is the scariest? Why?

Pre-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

In this stage, students focus on understanding the meaning of key vocabularies related to fear and their synonyms (e.g., phobia, panic, scared, suffer from, frightened, terrified, dizzy, nauseous, anxious, fear of butterflies). Then correct spelling of the words are written on the board for students. Finally, they will complete a matching exercise where they pair each word or phrase with its correct meaning or synonym.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information reading/listening tasks

In this stage, students will read the text more carefully to complete each phobia with the correct heading from a list of five phobias. Each heading corresponds to one of the five fears.

While-Reading/Listening #2 (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference reading/listening tasks

In this stage, the students are going to read some comments that were posted on fearof.net website. They are asked to match comments A to E to 1-5 fears in the text.

Post-Reading/Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

The students will be asked to discuss the following questions in group pf 3: Do you have or does anyone you know have a phobia? When and how did it start? How does it affect you or their life?
