Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson SS would have practiced reading including 5-key vocabulary items in the context of friendship

Subsidiary Aims

  • to provide speaking practice as a productive skill in the context of friendship

Procedure

Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will show a short clips of different kind of friends to SS and T will ask students what they understand from the video. Then T will demo a question and answer with a student afterwards T will tell SS to work in pairs and ask themselves these questions: What do you like in your friends? What don't you like in your friends?

Pre-teach Vocabulary (5-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the reading text

T will get feedback from students. From the feedback T will highlight the target language (vocabulary), and put it on the white board, emphasize it's meaning and then drill it in a sentence. The vocabulary to be taught are as follows: get rid of-throw away get on with- to be on friendly terms with getting to know- know somebody or something gradually got to-arrive at/in get in touch- make contact with somebody got a reply- past tense of verb 'get' same as verb 'to have' got (past tense of 'am / become')

Controlled Speaking Practice 1 (5-8 minutes) • To enable SS use target language

T asks instructs students that they will have a short task at which they will fill in the gaps with the correct vocabulary and then check with their pairs. T then hands out the task to SS and sets a time of 2 minutes to work with. Teacher then makes ready answer keys and tells them to get the answer key and check their answers. Next, T tells SS to work in pairs and ask each other the questions they have in their hands. Teacher Moves around to monitor them taking necessary notes of SS understanding of the task and mistakes. T then gets feedback from students and corrects necessary mistakes.

Reading Task (3 minutes) • To get the general idea about the text

T will give instruct SS on the reading Text they will have shortly. T will tell them to read only for one minute to scan the material just to know what it is all about. Then T will hand out the materials to them. After wards T will ask them what they found out about the text.

Reading for Specific information (8-10 minutes) • To practice understanding important information from the text

T then tells the student to work as a group and read the article again but this time to be prepared to answer questions in the next task they are about to do. The essence of this task is to summarize their understanding of cogent ideas given in the text. This task is presented as multiple choice questions. When they are done they will write out all the points as one paragraph. T then hands out the task to the students with a time limit of 5 minutes. After which teacher tells students to leave their groups and check other options and summary of the other groups to see if they have the same answers. Finally, T shows students the answer keys to confirm their work.

Semi- controlled Speaking Practice (5-8 minutes) • To practice asking questions using target language in the context of friendships

Next Teacher will move in further to by asking a ss some questions based on the text. Questions like: Do you need to edit your friends? Why do you need to get rid of some of them? Can old friends be useful? Should you get in touch with friends not useful to you? When is it important to get on with new friends? How can you get to know your new friends? T then ask ss to find a new partner and ask them some of these questions. T sets a time of 5 minutes for this task meanwhile, Teacher monitors students and takes notes from their discussions. After time expires, T gets a random feed back from students from each group especially perceived weak ones. If there are any corrections to be made, T highlights and corrects them.
