In this lesson students will practice third conditional and accuracy in speaking.

Main Aims

  • By the end of this lesson students will have practiced the third conditional in the context of regrets.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy practice in speaking related to the topic.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T will quickly draw a story about being late to work on the board.

Highlighting (3-5 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

T will elicit the target language. T will ask SS to give an example of the third conditional. T: Work in pairs. Think and give an example of the third conditional.

Clarification / Drill (8-10 minutes) • To concept check. Drill.

Focus on meaning. CCQs: Did smth happen in the past? Can we change it? imaginary situation (which didn't happen) in the past. Focus on pron. 'Work in pairs. Pick up an example. Tell one another. Pay attention to pronunciation.' + past perfect contract forms, + would have past participle - past perfect, - wouldn't have + past participle T will drill some examples highlighting pron. Focus on stress. Remind SS: the stressed words in the sentences are information words negative auxiliaries are always stressed would, have been and the contracted form of had(‘d) have a weak pronunciation. T will drill some examples highlighting sentence stress. Ex3a. Quick practice. T: Ill give you HOs. Quickly have a look at them. Listen and repeat. Copy the rhythm. T will distribute HO1.

Form. (5-7 minutes) • To focus on the form of the target language.

T will demonstrate the form in the board. if + past perfect, would have + past participle. Would have + past participle if + past perfect. T will drill several examples. T will set up task. T: HOs. Read the sentences. Write the verbs in brackets in the correct form. Check in pairs. Choose the person you haven't work with. ICQs. T will observe ss to collect errors and help if necessary.

Restrictive practice (4-5 minutes) • To provide restrictive practice of the target language.

T will provide HOs. T: Read the sentences. Write the sentences with the same meaning. Use the third conditional. You have 3 minutes Check in pairs. T will observe ss and help if necessary. Feedback.

Production (6-10 minutes) • To provide meaningful practice of the target language.

T: Now walk around. Ask one another about your regrets. Describe the situation. Then build the sentence using the third conditional. Ask at least 3 people. You can write. ICQs. T will observe SS and help if necessary.

Feedback (3-5 minutes) • To check understanding of the target language.

T will nominate SS to tell about S they asked. SS are expected to describe someones situation and build a sentence using the third conditional.

Fillers • If time to provide more restrictive practice of the target language for clarifying.

T will provide HOs. T: Read the clauses. Match A-K to 1-11.
