Procedure (65-88 minutes)
Model the task by answering the questions in ex 1A, on p 50 yourself. Talk about what you would you do if you needed a job and where you would go. Put SS into pairs and tell to discuss the questions with their partners within 3 min. Get a whole class feedback.
Have SS match the problems with the situations shown in the pictures in ex 1B, on p 50. Tell SS to talk to their partner about some of the worries mentioned in the previous exercise. Give them 2 min to exchange some ideas.
Tell SS to listen to the audio in ex 2A, on p 50 and answer the questions about the three speakers’ work life. Have SS compare and check their answers in pairs before sharing the answer key.
Tell students to read the predictions each speaker makes in ex 2B, on p 50. Play the recording again. Ask them to listen for the reasons each speaker gives for their predictions. Have SS compare their answers in pairs before sharing the answer key with the whole class.
Ask SS to answer the questions in ex 2C on p 50 such as whether they have been to a careers fair and what it was like. Model the task with your own answer first and give SS some time to discuss the questions in pairs. Get a whole class feedback.
Direct SS to ex 3A on p 50. Instruct them to look at the sentences and underline the correct word to complete the rules about “will and might.” Have SS compare their answers in pairs and get a whole class feedback.
Direct SS to page 152 and ask them to read the rule about will and might for predictions. Ask CCQs: “Do we use will when we are very sure or not sure? Is might stronger than will?” Elicit the form from the class and write it on the board. Play the recordings for SS to hear the sentences. Have the whole class repeat them chorally.
Direct SS to p 50 and tell them to write a positive response to each worry in ex 1B. Have SS compare their responses with a partner to see whose answers are the most positive. If their partner has a job, tell them to go to p 129 and those who do not have a job will go to p 128. Ask SS to take turns asking their partner the given questions. Swap roles so that each student answers their partner’s questions as well.
Instruct SS to find the jobs shown in the photos in ex 4A, p. 51 and then direct them to p 137. Tell students to match the jobs with the pictures in ex A, on p 137. Have SS compare their answers with a partner. Play the recording so they can listen and check their answers. Have SS repeat the words first chorally, then individually. Instruct them to discuss which jobs are popular in their country and which they would like to do. Allow 3 min for pair discussion before providing a whole class feedback.
Direct SS to p 51 and tell them to look at the jobs in the photos to answer the related questions with their partners.
Instruct SS to read the article to check their ideas in ex 5A. Give them 3 min to read the article again to answer the questions provided. Have them compare their answers with a partner. Elicit answers from the class and get a whole class feedback.
Put SS in small groups. Ask them to look at the predictions in ex 6A on p 51 and answer the given questions, explaining their reasons. Tell SS to write three new predictions in ex 6B. Have SS read their predictions to their group, stating whether they agree or disagree with each prediction. Monitor them closely and get a whole class feedback.
Ask SS reflective questions such as “What new vocabulary or expressions did you learn today? Which speaking activity did you enjoy the most? Why?“
