Procedure (51-81 minutes)
I will start by welcoming students to the course and informing them that today we will be exploring the reading section of the test, specifically one of the tasks within it. I will ask students to look at the task and try to complete the sentences with information about the academic reading section. Students then check their answers in groups then feedback will be provided. During feedback, I will highlight the features of the reading texts that the students will read in the academic IELTS section and explore some of the challenges quickly, such as being long and challenging, and that students do not have to read and understand every word to be able to answer the questions.
1. Tell Ss that the articles they will read will normally have headings and sub-headings, and they need to use them to understand what the text is about. 2. Ask Ss to look at the headline and sub-heading of the article, p 37, and ask them to answer the questions. Ex2 3. Ss do the task, then check their answers in groups. 4. Elicit answers from Ss, but do not confirm answers yet. 5. Ask Ss to read the first paragraph and answer the questions. Ex3 6. Provide Ss with feedback and tell them that those are the questions that they can ask themselves whenever they start reading a text.
1. Tell Ss to read the headings and sub-headings and predict what the text will be about. 2. Ask Ss to look at the headline and sub-heading of the article, p 38, and ask them to answer the questions. Ex4 3. Ss do the task, then check their answers in groups. 4. Elicit answers from Ss, confirm answers. 5. Ask Ss to read the second paragraph and answer the questions. Ex5 6. Provide Ss with feedback and tell them that those are the questions that they can ask themselves whenever they start reading a text.
1. Provide Ss with the whole text, p. 39. Tell Ss to read the headings and sub-headings and predict what the text will be about, then identify the main idea of each paragraph. I will tell the Ss how to do that as well before they start. 2. Ss do the task, then check their answers in groups. 5. Provide Ss with feedback and discuss their ideas with special focus on the wrong ones and identifying why they were wrong and what the correct answers are, and why.
1. Ask Ss to do Ex 9,10, p. 39, as this will help them reflect on the text. 2. Give Ss time to discuss their answers in groups, then provide feedback and highlight the importance of identifying the purpose of the paragraphs.
1. As Ss have already read the text and identified the main idea of each paragraph, they now need to match the information to the suitable paragraph. 2. Give Ss time to do the task, Ex 11, p 40. 3. Ss then check answers in pairs and then provide feedback. 4. In feedback, I will make sure to highlight how they found the information and why they made mistakes.
1. Ask Ss to go back and reflect on the question they did in the previous stage, and answer this question: ''Which key words helped you when reading the text to answer the questions?'' 2. During feedback, highlight the fact that Ss can use some key words to help them and ignore the unfamiliar ones. I will also introduce them to some techniques to be used when dealing with unfamiliar vocabulary in the text, as this is a core aspect of the reading test.
1. Provide Ss with clear instructions for the task and remind them of the steps they need to follow when matching the headings. 2. Ss do the task individually, then check answers. 3. Provide Ss with thorough feedback on their answers and provide clarification of the wrong answers for Ss to benefit.
