Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of future (will & won't) in the context of horoscope & fortune telling

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of horoscope & fortune telling

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will begin with the teacher sharing a short horoscope reading from this week. This will be followed by asking students to share the last horoscope they read and whether they are still waiting for it to come true.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose some of of my students sentences to write in the correct future prediction form on the board to draw their attention to the verb that I have used differently.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and ask the students some CCQs: Are the sentences about the past, present, or future? (Future). Can I mention the exact time they will happen? (No). Am I 100% sure this will happen, or am I just predicting? (Just predicting). Does this sentence mean I already have a new friend? (No). When will I meet the new friend? (Later). I will elicit the structure from the students by asking about the role of the words and the way the verbs are used: Subject + will / won’t + verb (base form). I will also present the negative and question forms, as well as the contracted form (’ll). To make predictions more natural, I will introduce expressions such as “I think… / I don’t think… / I’m sure…” + will.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do gap filling task/ sentence completion task on page 140 in the grammar bank in 4 minutes individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be divided into groups of 3–4. They will have 8 minutes to discuss their best horoscope reading ever, using will / won’t to talk about predictions. At the end of the discussion, each group will decide who had the best horoscope and present it briefly to the whole class. The teacher will monitor during the activity and provide delayed feedback if necessary.
