Main Aims

  • To provide detailed listening practice using a text about planning a holiday in the context of travel.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of travel.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will put a picture of two different vacation places. I will ask students describe the stuff in the picture and ask them to talk in pairs where they would want to go and why? And and students why they wouldn't want to go to the other place.

Pre-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

I will put a picture of a man and women on the board and tell the students that it is Luke and Monica, and they are planning a holiday but they can't decide where they want to go. I will tell them that Luke and Monica can't decide if they want to go to Phuket or Bangkok. I'll give them the information for both of the places and ask the students to discuss where they think Monica and Luke should go.

While-Reading/Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Students will listen to a conversation between Luke and Monica who are planning a holiday. They will be asked to listen and answer the following question: Where does each person want to go? And find one reason why they want to go there. After the listening the students will discuss there answer with their partner.

While-Listening #2 (14-20 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening task.

Students will listen to the conversation again, and will be given a worksheet. They have to fill in the gaps with the comparative form of the adjectives in the brackets. They will check their answers with pairs. I'll have them write their answers on the board and check all together. Students will then be asked to guess who said each sentence from the previous activity. They will discuss their guesses together and then we will listen to the audio again and check our answers.

Post-Listening (6-8 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

I will put the picture of the two places on the board again and have the students where they think Luke and Monica went on holiday. They will discuss their answers together and we will listen to a different audio and check.

Freer Speaking Activity (7-11 minutes) • To give students practice using the vocabulary and comparative grammar.

I will put a picture of two places on the board and ask the students what people can do there. Ex: go for a swim, go for a walk etc. I will ask the students where they would want to go. I will put the students into pairs. (those who want to go to location A will be paired with those who want to go to location B). They will tell each other why they want to go there and then come up with a place to go to together.
