To provide scan, gist and detailed reading practice using a text about language learning in the context of are americans bad at learning languages?
Subsidiary Aims
-
To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation in the context of struggles to learning new language.
Procedure (41-51 minutes)
the students will be asked if they think learning a foreign language is important and do they think they would still think the same if english was their first language.
the students will be taught about the adjectives+ prepositions such as " bad at, famous for" used in the text which will make understanding better.
the students are allowed to read the text and answer the following questions: Why does he / she think that Americans aren't motivated to learn languages? What reason do many schoolchildren give for not wanting to study a foreign language? How did a newspaper try to find out if Americans really are bad at learning languages? Why did Max decide to learn Spanish? How did he learn? What did he do when he finished the course? then they are asked to find the related phrase from the text and match them.
in this part the students have to scan the text and match the given topic sentences to each paragraph in the text. they will be asked to check their answers in pairs.
the students will be asked to answer the following questions: Do you think learning a new language is more about communication or its a cutural need? could you imagine yourself living in a foreign country without learning their language, why?
