Description

In this lesson students will listen to a conversation about San-Francisco. They will work on the blocking words from the listening. After listening they will do some comprehension exercises. Then they will talk about their favourite place in San-Francisco.

Main Aims

  • To provide listening for gist and specific information in a conversation about San-Francisco.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency speaking practice in a conversation about students' favourite place in San-Francisco

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Teacher shows photos of San-Francisco. Is it a country?-No, it is a city. Where is this city?-In America, California. Can you read these places? Teacher drills the pronunciation. Where are these places?-They are in San-Francisco.

Pre-Listening (5-7 minutes) • To prepare students for the text and make it accessible

Work alone a find these things in the photos. T models the task. T gives the hand-out. Students check in pairs. FB: T shows the answer key.

While-Listening #1 (10-12 minutes) • To provide students with less challenging gist and specific information listening tasks

Listen and put these photos in order. Which photo comes 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th. T demos the task on WB. Do you work in pairs?-Alone. Check in pairs. FB: WC FB Teacher writes the answers with the help of the class. 1D 2A 3B 4C

While-Listening #2 (14-16 minutes) • To provide students with more challenging detailed, deduction and inference listening tasks

T: Listen again. Work alone and match these into correct column. T demos the task on WB. Alone or in pairs?-Alone. T gives the hand-out. T plays the recording. Now check in your groups. FB: T. divides the class in 3 groups. Gives each group a column to work with. T asks each group to chose and stick the cut-outs only to their column. ICQ-do you stick all of them?-No, only the ones that go to your place. T plays the parts of the recording to highlight the correct answers.

Post-Listening (8-10 minutes) • To provide with an opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T models the task: My favourite place is Nob Hill. I go there by cable car. I see the whole city. T divides the class into groups: Discuss in groups. What is your favourite place in San-Francisco and why? FB: ask one student to tell the whole class about his partner. T. monitors.

Post-Listening 2 If-time (4-5 minutes) • To provide with another opportunity to respond to the text and expand on what they've learned

T models the task: My favourite place in Istanbul is Arnavutkoy. I eat good seafood there. Find new partnetrs and discuss in groups. What is your favourite place in Turkey and why? FB: ask one student to tell the whole class about his partner. T. monitors.
