Description

In this lesson, students will learn about function, use and form of wish/if only followed by Past Simple through a guided discovery based on the text used during the previous lesson. The lesson starts with a brief discussion about a song/video, to go on analyzing the model sentences found in the text. Then there is some controlled (matching exercise) and final freer written practice.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of wish/if only followed by Past Simple to express wishes and regret

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide product writing practice of sentences to express wishes about present

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The students will be shown a music video by Milow, that sets the context of expressing wishes. Show them the slide with the two questions on the WB and introduce the song. Let them listen to it for a couple of minutes then give them a minute more to talk in pairs about it. Ask for FB.

Exposure (3-5 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Introduce and give them the script of the text they listened to in the previous lesson. Ask them to look for and underline the three wishes in pairs. ICQ: Will you write the sentences or underline them? Feedback.

Highlighting (1-2 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Show the text highlighting the model sentences they have found (by using the OHP). Keep it on the WB for a while.

Clarification (13-15 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

T will give the students a GD handout to find out function and form of wish/if only + Past Simple. Ask them to complete the front page about meaning. Illustrate it and mix the pairs. ICQs: Are you looking at the back page? Are you working in pairs or alone? WC Feedback (ask for the answers). "Any questions?" If necessary, ask further CCQs: Where are the three men when they express their wishes? On the island. Do they regret not being with their family or in Los Angeles? Yes. Then ask them to turn the sheet and go on completing activity number two in pairs again. Ask them to compare their answers in group. WC Feedback using the OHP (write on the WB). Ask "Any questions?". If necessary, ask further CCQs about the form: When does it happen, in the present or in the past? In the present. To conclude ask them to complete the last activity about the form in pairs again. Show the question, elicit their answer and write it down as a feedback. CCQ: Are the two subjects always the same? No. At this point, elicit the negative form (didn't, weren't, couldn't..). After clarifying the form, drill the model sentences (backchaining) and highlight the falling intonation. Ask "Is it clear?" ""Any questions?

Controlled Practice (4-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will have a matching exercise to do. Mix the pairs again and show the handout, explaining that they have to match the situations with the sentences. Tell them to work in pairs. Ask them to stand up and compare their answers with the rest of the class. While they do it, write the answer key on the WB. Ask "Do you agree?"

Semi-Controlled Practice (optional activity) (5-6 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

If time allows, the students will be given a further activity for semi-controlled practice. Show the handout and explain that they are going to write some sentences to describe the pictures, by using the provided hints. Ask them to work in pairs. Use the OHP for a quick feedback. Ask "Do you agree?", "Any questions?".

Free Practice (5-7 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be asked to make a wish (using the TL), regarding something in the present that they would like to change. Every students writes a wish on a cut-out (without signing it) and keeps it secret. Each one puts his wish into the wish box. When everybody is ready, they will stand up and come to pick a wish from the box. They read it and stick it on the walls. All the students will go around to read the wishes and they will try to guess whose they are and why. The teacher will monitor and give corrections on the WB. Ask "Any questions?".
