Description

In this lesson, students will practice their speaking and fluency in regard to changes within in a city.

Main Aims

  • To introduce and provide practice of speaking for fluency when talking about changes in a city or town

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide practice with using vague statistical information in the context of changes within a city

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss two photos of old and new Shanghai. Ask them: Which country or city do you think this is? How many years do you think separates these photos? What are the most important differences? Reveal: It's Shanghai, China

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide a model of production expected in coming tasks through reading/listening

Let’s listen to a student from Shanghai talk about how it’s changed. I will play the audio. Once done, assign each S a slide (slides 4-6). We will listen to the audio one more time. After, tell them to chose the correct options to complete the sentences. Please answer in full sentences. 1. Shanghai has changed enormously in the last thirty years or so / in the last forty years or thereabouts. (or so) 2. There are now just under / just over twenty-four million people living here ... (just under) 3. They've built 60-odd skyscrapers / an incredible number of skyscrapers, and the skyline has changed beyond recognition. (an incredible number of) 4. There are loads of / quite a few shops, museums and restaurants... (loads of) 5. I think they're building or planning to build somewhere in the region of / approximately seven more - that's a big improvement. (somewhere in the region of) 6. They've established a green belt and there are upwards of thirty parks / dozens of parks now. (dozens of parks now) Put them in BORs to compare answers in pairs. Bring back and call on Ss to share their answer for each question to correct as a class.

Useful Language (8-10 minutes) • To highlight and clarify useful language for coming productive tasks

Share google doc link in chat. Assign Ss to pairs or small groups (depending on amount of Ss). Tell them to work together to complete all three activities. Activity 1 - Match each phrase with the correct meaning 1. In the last thirty years or so - c 2. Just under - a 3. An incredible number of - f 4. Loads of - b 5. Somewhere in the region of - d 6. Dozens of parks - e Activity 2 - Identify the error and correct the sentence. In the last thirty years or so, the city will expand its population by nearly a million. → In the last thirty years or so, the city has expanded its population There were just under hundreds of people at the stadium. → Just under a hundred people / Just under one hundred people There was loads of traffic were reported on the highway this morning. → Loads of traffic was reported She earns somewhere in the region of about €60,000 per year. → Somewhere in the region of €60,000 / about €60,000 Activity 3 - Highlight the stress in each sentence. Shanghai has changed enormously in the last THIrty years or so. (SHANGhai has CHANGED enorMOUSly in the last thirty years or so. There are DOZens of PARKS now. There are LOADS of SHOPS, museums, and restauRANTS. Bring back from BORs and call on Ss from different groups to answer. Check answers as a class. DEC in needed. Drill the sentences quickly for pronunciation.

Productive Task(s) (10-15 minutes) • To provide an opportunity to practice target productive skills

Time to chat: Talk to your partner about changes within a town or city you know. After you and your partner share, decide if you’d like to visit the place your partner spoke about. Put Ss into BORs. Remind Ss to use vague or not exact words to describe these changes. (IF all Ss finish too quickly, I can reassign the BORs and have them go again with their different partner).

Feedback and Error Correction (6-8 minutes) • To provide feedback on students' production and use of language

DEC on good use or errors in use of useful expressions. Use LA sheet to inform correction decisions.
