Main Aims

  • To provide clarification of the past simple wh- questions in the context of past events.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide accuracy speaking practice in a conversation in the context of past events.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

I will show students pictures of people from the past who have made history. I'll ask the students if they know any of the people from the picture. Each picture will have a question to it and students will talk with each other about the answers to the questions.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

I will give the students a chart that clarifies the past simple wh- question. Students will use the questions from the previous activity to put the questions in the correct place in the chart. Students will check their answers in pairs.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will put the chart from the previous activity on the blackboard and have student come up to the board and ask them to fill in the chart. I will ask CCQs to ensure that they have understood how to ask past simple wh- questions. I should make sure that the students used did, instead of do, and used infinitive form of the verb. ex: come instead of came.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students will be given mixed up words, and their task will be to put the words in the correct order to create a sentence. They will work individually and then check their answers with pairs. Then I will give two groups the set of words and ask them to put the correct order on the walls. The two groups will check each others questions and then ask if the students have any questions.

Semi-Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students will get into pairs and will have to ask their partner the questions from the previous activity. This will give them practice speaking using the target language. I will monitor for errors and make error corrections.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

Students will be given a set of words. Their task is to choose 5-8 events in their life time and write the year/month when these things happened in a timeline. (I will model my timeline first). Then the students will get into pairs and tell their partner about their timeline. Their partner will ask questions about the stuff on the timeline. Ex: student 1- i met my husband in 1998. Student 2- where did you meet him?
