Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of zero conditional in the context of childhood

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading in the context of overly protective parents

Procedure

Lead in (2-4 minutes) • Set the context

Have Ss answer these questions: 1. When you were a child, what did your parents make you do? What did they let you do? 2. How do children spend free time these days? How is this different to when you were a child? Elicit WCFB

Pre-teach vocab (2-4 minutes) • Clarify any blocking vocab

Elicit "grow up," and "the media." Briefly give the meaning and form.

Gist task (3-4 minutes) • Familiarize students with the text and expose them to the TL

Instruct Ss to quickly read the article. Have them answer the following question alone: Which sentence best describes the article? 1. Life for children now is harder than it used to be. 2. Parents protect their children too much these days. 3. Children don’t want to play outside anymore. Paircheck and WCFB on the board.

Detailed task (5-8 minutes) • To further familiarize students with the text and TL

Have Ss read and answer the following questions on their own. Pair check and whole class feedback. True or false? 1. We used to worry about our children more than we do now. 2. Most British parents let their children walk to school. 3. Julie Benz thinks parents worry too much about their children. 4. Life is more dangerous for children now than it used to be. 5. Children don’t spend as much time with other children as they used to.

Clarification (10-7 minutes) • To clarify meaning and form of TL

Give Ss handout that models TL and has Ss elicit the name and form of TL. Make sure Ss can create the form on their own and identify all examples of TL.

Controlled practice (5-7 minutes) • Make sure students understand TL

Use gap fill to have Ss create correct verb forms for zero conditional. Ss work in groups. Check on board.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-9 minutes) • To check that students understand TL in a less structure environment

In groups, Ss reorder words to create correct zero conditional sentences. Feedback via students coming OB and writing answers.

Free practice (10-12 minutes) • To make sure Ss can create the TL in a free and natural environment

Have students work with their group to create 8 zero conditional sentences about childhood. Monitor and provide delayed feedback.
