Description

In this lesson students are going to learn how to use past simple tense to talk about the things they did in the past through PPP in the context of holiday. The lesson starts with a talk about the way we spent our last weekend. It is followed by a discussion about students' best holiday with a focus on accuracy.

Procedure

Warmer/Lead-in (3-5 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

The class will be started by a talk about the way I spent my last weekend. It will be followed by asking students to tell the class about the way they spent their weekend.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

I will choose 3 of my students sentences to write in the correct past simple form on the board to draw their attention to the verb that I have used differently.

Clarification (8-10 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

I will draw a timeline on the board and ask the students some CCQs: Are the sentences about the past, present, or future? (Past). Are they finished? (Yes). Can I mention the time they happened? (Yes). I will elicit the structure from the students by asking about the role of the words and the way I have changed the verbs. sub + verb (past simple form). I will let them know about the regular verbs that receive an ed at the end and about the irregular verbs that change completely in the past simple form. They will be given the list of the irregular verbs to read and memorize. The students will be informed about the correct pronunciation of the verbs when they are added ed. played /d/. asked /t/. created /Id/. I will mention the correct pronunciation of the verbs like said when they are used in the past form.

Controlled Practice (10-12 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Students are going to do gap filling task on page 120 in the grammar bank in 4 minutes individually. They will have 2 minutes to check their answers in pairs and then we will check the answers with the whole class.

Free Practice (10-14 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

The students are going to be divided into groups of 3 or 4. They will have 8 minutes to talk about their best holiday ever. at the end, they are going to tell the class who in the group they think had the best holiday. They will be monitored and feedback will be given at the end if needed.
