Beginner level

In this lesson, Ss learn about past simple (regular and irregular) through a guided discovery approach. After the context has been set, Ss will read a text about an amazing and extraordinary journey that two friends had. Ss will be guided through the text to explore and discover the past simple tense. Having learned about the past simple, they will have a controlled, semi controlled, and free practice to apply what they've learned.

Main Aims

  • To provide clarification and practice of Past simple regular and irregular verbs in the context of travel

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide gist and detailed reading practice using a text about an amazing journey in the context of travel

Warmer/Lead-in (3-4 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

In this stage, T will show Ss some pictures of holiday and transports and ask some questions about the way people usually go on holiday. T will also show the picture of tuk-tuk and ask if it could be used for a long journey. Then Ss will be asked a question about the main picture of the text to set the context.

Exposure (7-8 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

This is the point where Ss will read a text a on their own and answer the questions. After a quick peer-check, Ss will answer the teacher's questions. This is meant to guide Ss through the text to see and discover the TL.

Highlighting (2-3 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Here T draws Ss' attention to TL and asks how the verbs in pink are different from those in blue. Ss may also be asked to discuss in pairs, too.

Clarification (7-8 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

After drawing Ss' attention to the regular and irregular verbs in text, T will clarify the meaning of TL by asking CCQs from them. Then T will then elicit the form of TL from the Ss and get them to do some drilling.

Controlled Practice (6-7 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

In this part, after having a short practice on regular and irregular past tense verbs, Ss will be told to read a text and fill in the blank spaces using the words in brackets. After Ss have done peer-checking, T will give feedback and discuss the questions with the whole class.

Semi-Controlled Practice (7-8 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

In this part, Ss think about the last time they visited a different city or town. They will be asked to write 7 sentences and then tell their partners about it. The partners will be required to take notes for the following free activity.

Free Practice (7-8 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

In this part, using the notes they have taken from the previous activity, Ss will be required to tell the class about the city or town his or her partner has talked about. In the meantime, T will be monitoring and checking their errors for further feedback.
