Procedure (61-89 minutes)
Write the following on the board: Think of something you bought on your last holiday: "What did you buy?" "How much did it cost?" "Do you still have it?" "Was it a good idea to buy it?" Give SS a few minutes to discuss their answers in pairs. Take feedback as a class.
Ask SS to look at the picture and answer the questions in ex 1A, p 84. Elicit some ideas as a class, but don't confirm the correct answers at this stage.
Play Part 1 of the video for SS to check their ideas in ex 1B, p 84. Check answers as a class.
Play Part 1 of the video again for SS to listen and answer the questions in ex 1C, p 84. Check answers as a class.
Play the recording in ex 2A, p 84 for SS to listen and decide which word has a different sound. Check the answer as a class. Drill the words "here" and "really" and write /ıə/ on the board. Drill "yeah" and write /eə/ on the board. Individually, ask SS to write the words in the correct place in the table. Play the recording in ex 2B, p 84 for SS to check their answers. Check answers as a class. Play the recording in ex 2C, p 84, pausing after each word for SS to listen and repeat. Monitor and correct students' pronunciation as necessary.
Use the pictures on SB pp 84-85 to pre-teach "ticket office", "station official", "passenger", "platform". In pairs, ask SS to think about the questions Megan and Sophia ask the station official in ex 3A, p 84. Elicit SS' suggestions and write any acceptable and correct suggestions on the board.
Play Part 2 of the video for SS to check if Megan and Sophia ask any of the questions on the board in ex 3B, p 84. Have SS to compare answers in pairs. Play the recording again if necessary. Check answers as a class.
Play Part 2 of the video again for SS to listen and note down the three pieces of information in ex 3C, p 84. Have SS to compare answers in pairs. Play the recording again if necessary.
In pairs, ask SS to discuss the question in ex 3D, p 84. Take feedback as a class. Encourage SS to give reasons for their opinions.
Elicit or pre-teach "passenger" (a person who is travelling in a car, bus, train or plane, but not driving or flying it). Ask SS to decide whether a passenger or station official says each expression in ex 4A, p 85. Have SS to compare answers in pairs. Play the recording in ex 4B, p 85 for SS to check their answers to 4a. Check answers as a class. Check students understand the meaning of "direct train" by writing on the board: There____ a direct train to London. You change at reading, and asking SS to say the missing word (isn't). Play the recording again, pausing after each phrase for SS to listen and repeat. Monitor and check SS are pronouncing the phrases correctly. Correct as necessary. Ask SS to look at the two sentences and add the missing prepositions. Play the recording in ex 4C, p 85 for SS to listen and check their answers. Give SS up to two minutes to put the conversation in the correct order. Play the recording in ex 4D, p 85 for them to check their answers. Check answers as a class. Put SS into pairs to practice the conversation in 4d. They then swap roles, changing the kind of transport and the details in ex 4E, p 85. Monitor and help as necessary.
Divide the class into pairs and assign A and B roles. Student As look at the travel information role cards on SB p.110. Student Bs do the same on SB p.112. Student A asks Student B about trains to Manchester and Student B replies. They ten swap roles and Student B asks Student A about buses to Oxford. Note any common mistakes to deal with during feedback. Tell SS to go back to SB p.85 in ex 5(speaking)
Give SS one minute to read Amelia's message to Megan and answer the questions in ex 6A, p 85. Have SS to compare answers in pairs. Check answers as a class.
Ask SS to go to Writing Plus 10C on SB p.162. Go through the information in Exercise a as a class. Individually, ask SS to do Exercises b and c. Check answers as a class. Tell SS to go back to SB p.85 in ex 6B. Give SS ten minutes to write a message to a friend, using the ideas given in ex 6C, p 85. Remind them to use the present continuous where possible, and correct word order in questions. Monitor and help as necessary. Put SS into pairs. Ask SS to read their partner's message and try to answer the questions in ex 6D, p 85. Take feedback as a class. Ask: "Did you partner's questions?", "Which question(s) did you answer?"
