Main Aims

  • To provide clarification, review and practice of verb collocations of have, go, do in the context of daily activities

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide fluency through mingling speaking activity with the focus on verb collocations.


Warmer/Lead-in (2-3 minutes) • To set lesson context and engage students

T starts the lesson by saying that she had a very busy weekend and did twelve different things. She wants them to guess the actions she did at the weekend. Ss give answers, teacher notes them on the board in two groups as one word verbs and multi-word verbs. Then, she draws students' attention to multi-words. Teacher will motivate them to learn more multi-words lesson in this lesson.

Exposure (8-10 minutes) • To provide context for the target language through a text or situation

Students mime the given verb collocation to classmates to guess. When miming finishes, T shows photo of more abstract verbs to elicit. Teacher or students don't write anything at this stage because writing on the board or notebook makes the task in highlighting part meaningless and repetitive.

Highlighting (2-4 minutes) • To draw students' attention to the target language

Students are given a handout to group the words in three categories as have, do, go in pairs. This written exercise helps them to process categorization cognitively and visually. They do PC. Feedback is given by grouping students into three as have-do-go and make them write answers on the board.

Clarification (3-4 minutes) • To clarify the meaning, form and pronunciation of the target language

Students drill the words. T shows three slights to elicit and clarify the past form of verbs. And drill the sentences together.

Controlled Practice (5-6 minutes) • To concept check and prepare students for more meaningful practice

Ss do a controlled gap-fill exercise. Teacher nominate ss for feedback and ask other students for correction in case of error.

Controlled Practice (8-10 minutes) • To concept check further and prepare students for free practice

Students are paired as A and B. A students are provided with a handout which consists of 6 different sentences with gap. The gaps focus on the noun part of collocations. A reads the sentence with gap to B. B listens the sentence, finds the word to fill the gap and repeats the sentence with completed form of it. A checks the answer with the key in the handout. When A students finish they swap the roles.

Free Practice (8-10 minutes) • To provide students with free practice of the target language

T provides each student with a different question to mingle and ask classmates. They have to extend the dialogue with another Wh- question after they get answer to the first question. In the feedback session teacher asks each student about the partners' answers. questions: 1. What do you have lunch for? possible extension: Where, When, Who...with?, 2. Who do you go for a walk with? possible extension:Where, When, How long ? 3. Where do you go shopping? possible extension:When, Who... with?, What do you buy? 4. When do you do some exercise?possible extension: Where, Who... with, How long...? 5. What do you do your homework with? Where, When, How long?
