Listening about the months of the year,ordinal numbers and dates of birthday.
By the end of this lesso,Ss should be able to say dates in English with focuses on months,ordinal numbers and years.
Speaking:dialogues between Ss to tell class then who is the youngest or who is born in the same month with focuses on accuracy than fluency.
Procedure (37-45 minutes)
T shows a picture of a calendar then elicits answers to the questions: What`s this? do you have one? Tell me one thing you write in it. T elicits words such as dates,birthdays from Ss Who first work in pairs then feedback to Wc.
T then follows up with questions to elicit answer from Ss: What day is it today? Monday.What day is it tomorrow? Tuesday.What day was it yesterday?Sunday. then what month is it?(pointing to the calendar) June. T writes June on WB in the middle on the right part to leave space for the other months up and down June. T: what is the next months? July.T then writes July under June and continues until writing all the months. T puts the stress on each word and emphasizes elicits from Ss why the first letter of the month is big or capital letter. T plays the recording (T 9.14) then T points to the months on WB and asks Ss to repeat chorally and individually.T checks for accurate pronunciation,drills if needed. Suggestions:repeat backwards-cover two months randomly with a sheet of A4 paper while drilling so they continue repeating until all the months are covered and they repeat them by heart. T: what month do you like most? August. Why? Because my birthday is in August. So is my brithday. T writes the two sentences on WB and Ss repeat them chorally T changes the month while drilling until Ss get used to it.
T: what is the first month of the year? January. Then T writes ( 1st.The first month is ) next to January on the right part of WB. T: what is the twelfth month ? December. T set explicitly the context and writes it on WB: Ordinal numbers T writes (12th. The Twelfth month is ) next to December. T elicits Ss to tell the ordinal numbers for the other months with focuses on The abbreviations with last two letters:1st,2nd,3rd,4th,.. T writes thirteenth,fourteenth,fifteenth on WB. T plays recording (T9.15) then gets Ss to repeat chorally and individually till 15th. T gives HO of numbers from 16th till 31st and get Ss to work in pairs to say them. T monitors and note down any common errors. T then plays recording (T9.16) Ss check their answers,T drills if necessary.
T hands out folded paper of ex.13 to get Ss to write individually the missing months in the calendar from the box. Ss check answers by looking at the WB. Then ex.14 to match individually the words and numbers then check in pairs. Meanwhile T writes first,second,..on WB then gets Ss to write answer on WB.(2 answers for each s.)
T hands out ex.15 and asks a colleague to read aloud the dates.Ss underline the dates they hear.
Before the task with a stronger student,T :when`s your birthday? T elicits: It`s on (the) third (of) March. What time were you born? at two o`clock in the morning. then T writes the two answers on WB and get Ss to ask each other and my colleagues the two questions and report back to me the youngest and the oldest one in the class. T monitors and note down any errors for delayed error correction.
T shows a picture of sara`s birthday and ask the following questions: Why is there a party? How old is she? Who is at the party? What is on the table in front of her? T elicits answers from Ss then plays the recording (T9.18 )and get Ss to join in .
