Description

In this session, Ss are going to work on their grammar skills. As a warm-up Ss are going to answer some questions about how their last week or month was spent. Then, Ss are presented with a power point of 2 famous singers/actors/athletes and the T will questions about it to engage the Ss and later on Ss are given a handout about the people on the PowerPoint which includes the target language examples. Then, the T will present the grammer on the board using MFP method. Next, Ss are provided with some controlled and semi-controlled practices and at the end of the session, the Ss are going to be grouped to talk about their future plans using the target language.

Main Aims

  • To teach Ss the correct usage of will and going to and help them understand the difference between them via instructions.

Subsidiary Aims

  • To provide students with speaking practice in discussing personal plans and spontaneous decisions using the target language.

Procedure

(E) 1. Warm-up • To set lesson context and engage students

Show Ss the first slide of the PowerPoint and engage them by asking questions. such as: *Will they win any awards in the future? *When do you think they will retire?

(S) 2. Exposure • To provide Ss with target language in context

*Giving Ss handouts which includes examples of the target language *Asking Ss to read the text individually and then pair them into small groups and asking them to discuss the text and reach a conclusion. *Inviting each group to share their conclusion with the whole class. *Drawing a timeline on the board and explaining the future timeline, showing how will and going to can be used to describe future plans.

(S) 3. Modeling • To clarify MFP and make sure that students have learned the lesson by asking controlled and semi-controlled questions.

*Explaining the usage of will and going to for talking about future plans *Highlighting the differences between will and going to via instructions. For example: Will is used for spontaneous decisions, promises and opinions (you have an exam. I will help you) Going to is used for pre-planned actions and predictions with evidence (It is cloudy. It is going to rain tonight) *Explaining and practicing the shortened forms and natural pronunciation of will and going to , for example: I will ~ I"ll , He will ~ He"ll I'm going to ~ I'm gonna , They are going to ~ They're gonna *Checking Ss understanding of the difference between will and going to by asking guided questions. Such as: I"ll help you, is this pre-planned or spontaneous? We're going to France, Was this decided before or just now? *Ss will work in groups to make predictions about the future of famous people using will and going to while the T monitors Ss and provides feedback as needed. then groups share their predictions with the class

(A) 4. Activation • To provide Ss with the opportunity to use the target language in their speaking.

*Ss are mixed into new groups and discuss their plans for the next 2 years, using will and going to to describe their intentions and predictions while the T monitors Ss and provides feedback as needed.
